Reply: (edit)If you are talking about your IP Address, it is determined by your Internet Service Provider. You could contact their technical support staff to request a change of address.

Reply: (edit)Okay, say I'm getting a new computer (everything, the whole nine yards). Does that mean I will be getting a new IP also.

Reply: (edit)If you continue using the same ISP as before, keeping the same email address, then nothing will change. Bear in mind what possum said in #2 (in that instance you can only really talk about your IP being within a range of variable numbers).

Reply: (edit)Let us know why you are needing to change your IP address/number and why you need to use dial-up on a cable modem. Folks could probably more easily suggest a solution to the need. In general, however, yes...your IP address is set by the your service provider (like AOL, Earthlink, etc) because it is determined by THEIR equipment. And as the above folks mentioned, it will change each time you connect IF you have a dial-up connection. If you have a cable modem connection, it is Usually static (always the same). If you have a DSL connection...it may or may not change....ask your tech support about that if you have a DSL connection. Dial-up over DSL??? not sure what you mean...but...most broadband providers have a dial-up access option as a back-up, in the event that the cable/dsl connection is having problems. It can be used at any time, actually, but you will usually be charged for it IF it used more than a certain number of minutes in the period of a month. Those back-up dialup accounts would almost certainly have a "dynamic" IP addresses (changes each time it is dialed). Hope this helps.

Reply: (edit)If your IP is a true static, assigned by your ISP, then it won't change. If it's dynamic, then depending on your ISP's equiptment, it may change. That depends on how their DHCP assigns IP's. I know with my particular ISP, if I change my network card (and power down/up my cable modem) then my IP changes, when I put the old card back in, I get my old IP. Apparently, they use the mac address (different on every network card) to determine an IP. Hope that helps.
