Hi guys. I just had the most riduclus bit of news today.. I heard that microsoft will not be supporting the ability of outlook express to view hotmail account emails. it seems that they require a fee for this yearly. a $19.99 or 19.95 yearly fee..
This made me mad cause I use 3 accounts with my outlook express.. not counting my pop3 mail. Some still may be able to view hotmail with outlook if they set there account up before this action took effect.. but it might not last long :(.. So heres my question (finaly) Is there a "Free" email client that would be able to look up almost any type of email account (hotmail, yahoo etc) without this problem? Sorry for the long explination..

Thanks in advance

The Hotmail/Outlook Express situation is true. I recieved it in an email from Hotmail.
Hotmail has just increased storage from 2 megs to 250 megs, and as well has increased it's attachment limit to 10 megs.
That's the good news. The bad news is by about April 2005, unless you sign up for their premium service ($19.95 per year, which includes a 2 gig storage limit) you will no longer be able to access it in outlook express.
I use it now in outlook express, and would like to continue but haven't decided yet.
P.S. It's a grandfathered thing. New hotmail accounts, even if they take the premium option will not be given the Outlook Express option.
Anyone know of a way to run another email program in Outlook express, please let me know.

Just trying

Tried Foxmail? Described as "The free alternative to Outlook"

http://www.kvr-vst.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=606212

I don't use this myself and know very little about it. I haven't yet found any recent info re: The Outlook/Hotmail situation and Foxmails capacity(if any) to bypass this.

No doubt it will be the dominating topic of conversation in that forum (link above) very soon.

This is what Microsoft's Knowledge Base says about this issue:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;878462

"MSN Hotmail no longer supports Distributed Authoring and Versioning (DAV) for free user accounts. Outlook Express uses the DAV interface to connect to Hotmail. Only paid Hotmail accounts will work correctly with Outlook Express. If you configured Outlook Express or Outlook to access your Hotmail account before DAV support was ended, you may still be able to use Outlook Express to open a free Hotmail account. However, eventually Hotmail will no longer support DAV for all free Hotmail accounts."

You'll need to find an email program that does not use DAV.

Also more news on this, you're not necessarily safe with a Grandfather Clause. I have had a hotmail account for more than 5 years, and can no longer use Outlook Express to check it. While at the same time, a newer account (maybe 2 years old) still works.

Makes no sense to me. And I'm quite frustrated with this. I plan to cancel my account, because the last thing I want to do is go to Hotmail.com to check my email.

My guess is that Microsoft wants you to at least look at it's advertisements on Hotmail.com if you're using their account for free. Not a stupid idea, but very frustrating for it's long time users.

Is it just me...or do Hotmail really suck? Trying to bribe us with their '10mb attachment limit' and '250mb storage'...when some of us DON'T want their spyware that downloads automatically when entering their site. Yes, if you have a spyware auto-protect program, it picks up hotmail repeatedly trying to give you a spyware program...I think it was called Avenue.

Come on hotmail...be reasonable, it's not like you don't make enough money anyway.

For now I'll be using foxmail...

boo hotmail, boo.

I have been using hotmail for more than 6 years and mostly i use outlook express.

For the past 1 month i was trying to use gmail and i was very much impressed. wow exellent. It also has Gmail notifier that runs in our systray. It is far more superior than the outlook express and it has very great speed.

Then i come to know that microsoft is stopping us to use outlook express to access our hotmail account. Not a bad idea for them to make us to visit the ads. but i hate going to the site.

So for me, i am really OK to use gmail and it safisfies my expectation. The only concern is that for the past 6yrs i have acuumulated lot of contacts in hotmail account and so i need to do a careful shift without loosing the contacts.

now for your question. Your friend has to send the invitition for joining the gmail. then when you started using gmail for couple of weeks, you will see a link in your account where by u can send 6 invitition to your friens/family members to get their gmail account. Likewise it goes in a chain.....

For those of you who already have gmail but not aware of this excellent tool gmail notifier:
here you go: http://toolbar.google.com/gmail-helper/

cheers

I recently got a gamil account, but the http://gmail-is-too-creepy.com/ article really scares me - what if google decides that anyone can search through your email?

So I paid $20/year to get my own web hosting (got from ebay), 2 GB disk space; unlimited email account to share with friends and family, pop3 and webmail access(yes!), with spamassassin; a web site. only $7 extra to register your own domain, but it's your domain! yourname@yourdomain.com is nice! For privacy and convenience, I am willing to pay the $30/yr.

I have gmail and I like it. I've used hotmail forever and now I'm just fed up. I'm tired of having to delete everything and now I can't access it with outlook express. AHHH. If you'd like an invitation to gmail, go to www.gmailswap.com and ask someone to send you one. I received one in 10 minutes.
Another thing...I never thought my email was going to be private! Nothing is!

Dear Russ,

You might be requesting an invite to G-mail on the wrong forum on www.gmailswap.com It has two forums- one for people who are willing to give/pay something for an invite, the other for people who want something in return of their offering an invite. Usually you do not need to offer anything more than your gratitude. Or try searching the other forum where users are willing to send invites and expecting NOTHING in return. Don't forget to enter your e-mail where anyone can send you an invite.

As for yahoo, I got this interface YahooPops and it works perfect with OE. http://yahoopops.sourceforge.net/
I was yet to come to terms with the feeling of satisfaction on getting both Yahoo and Hotmail in my OE when suddenly Hotmail ditched its users. Hope someone comes up with an interface for it too.

Hi Amit,
Thanks for the info. I tried that Gmail Swap Site for over 2 hours, but either I wasn't able to login or when I did the only response I received was someone who wanted me to sign up at another site for Free Ipods requiring that I give my Credit Card info.
