Subject: Home network
OS: ME
CPU/Ram: PENTIUM 3
Comment:

i am trying to set up a home network between my home pc (pentium 3 with ME) and my laptop (celeron with XP)I have setup Win95 networks before and add/remove machines to out winNT ntwork at work.
The problem is my home pc. I cannot run home network wizard as i get a fatal error message
OK i can live with that so i have installed card, dianostics works ok , winME sees it and i install drivers, so far so good
I give IP adress of 192.168.1.1 and
subnet of 255.255.255.0 and engage file sharing options
client is microsoft networks
2 adapters ie dial up and card
2tcp/ip again dial up and card
service - file sharing (with both boxes ticked) this all makes sense so i "OK" and reboot my machine - normal so far
When i reboot i should be able to see myself on the network ( even if laptop is not connected)
but i cant, OK this could be because i have not allowed sharing, BUT I HAVE, Ok so
i need to allow sharing of my C drive
so open "my computer" and right click my c drive but it does not give the open to share (it is not even "grayed" out, not there atall
So totally stuck now
Also when i right click my network icon and choose properties it goes into network configuration, again normal but if i choose ADD it should give me 4 options ie client, adaptor, protocol and service BUT i dont get the adaptor option i just get the other three

So if anyone has any ideas PLEASE HELP

are computer connected directly with cable? is it a crossover cable? any firewalls? same workgroup name on both pc's? set ip on other machine to 192.168.1.2. they can't have the same computer name either. make sure computer names are short and have no spaces. xp has a built in firewall that might be on. try pinging. on both comptuer you should be able to ping yourself start>run "ping 127.0.0.1" then try "ping 192.168.1.1"

I have a hub with normal cable attached.
If I attach PC (with ME) to hub (and not laptop) my understanding is it should be able to see itself.
I tested this by using same cable and hub port with the XP laptop on its own and it can see itself
The ME PC has no firewall
I dont think it is the network card as I should still have the Share option for my C drive
Computer name is "ibm" and workgroup is "home"
So think problem is with ME?

There's some detailed info on setting up a LAN at this site:

Or you might try the ME forum:

You probably have this one covered but have you got your IP address from your ISP as if you have not asked them for a Static IP address you will not be able to connect up as your IP address will be diffeent each time you try to log on, this is due to a shortage of IP adressess using the present IPv4 based on a 32 bit number.

This would be better posted on the networking forum.

You should make the XP machine the effective "server" by setting the gateway on the '98 PC to the XP's IP address, i.e. 192.168.1.2, with a DNS entry for the same address.

The XP machine will then need an account set up with the same logon name and password as the '98 machine, so the latter can access shares on it.

I've got a network working that way right now, so post back if you still have problems.
