Hi!

The problem started on my personal computer, Compaq Presario running Win98. My computer was lagging horribly so i decided to run scandisk to see if I could find something wrong with it. The computer froze during the process. I rebooted and windows froze immediately after begging to load. I rebooted into Ms-Dos and got this error:
HIMEM.SYS is missing
Make sure that the file is in your Windows directory

We've replaced the fiiles, checked config.sis msconfig, command.com, autoexec.bat and everything sure appears to be in perfect order.
While accessing my personal computer through the network from an additional computer, Eventually the 2nd computer developed the same EXACT problem. Both computers cannot boot in safemode, they cannot log into windows from Ms-Dos.

I believed the problem sounded like a virus. I searched all over the web and found nothing about a virus that causes this kind of problem. can anyone help me out? This is driving me insane!

Do u have an anti-virus program... Is it updated? If u need to a free AV go to www.grisoft.com. If u need a more competent scan, then go to: http://security.symantec.com/ssc/vc_scan.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym&plfid=23&pkj=XPNHRHYTINMHDKDCWLL. I don't doubt u've tried this or have an AV, but u didn't state it. But ya, sounds like a virus. U should probably post this in the "Security and Virus" section. Cheers.

You say you've checked your AUTOEXEC.BAT and other files, thats good also make sure WIN is the last command in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file and watch out for using a different set of capital or small letters when calling these files up as they duplicate depending on which one you use.
For example call them up with:
EDIT C:AUTOEXEC.BAT---or
EDIT C:Autoexec.bat

ok, I gotta say this.... 1. win98 will boot to the gui regarless of if you have "win" as your last line in the autoexec or not. It's not based on that anymore, it's based on a setting in the msdos.sys (bootgui=1). Also, on systems running any microsoft os, filename case doesn't matter. If you were running linux, then yes, Autoexec.bat and AUTOEXEC.BAT are different files. But not on a windows o/s machine.

Microsoft has a few things to say about your problem...
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;296636
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;116253

Check to see if those help you out, and do scan for a virus though, regadless of if this helps or not.

I have an antivirus program that i used to scan the computer prior to the 2nd computer dying.
Norton Antivirus which was updated 2 days before the incident.

We used the bootdisk several times and still also got the message.

We replaced himem.sys, still got the error.

Also, We ended up getting fed up with the first computer and formatted. Its now working fine.
The 2nd computer is working now, we went to the scanreg /restore in Dos.
quite strange that the last saved registry was 3-25-01 when the computer was used just two days ago?
Reinstalled windows, same error and freeze on boot occurs.

we restored the registry from the previous stated date. Computer now boots into windows yet it is running extremely slow and while attempting to operate windows, some programs just stop responding. ctrl-alt-del, close them. and then a few seconds later something else will stop responding.

Still convinced its a virus.
