I am missing HIMEM.SYS where can I find it and how do I replace it

when I started on safe mode it tells me that HIMEM.SYS has detected unreliable XMS memory at address 04000014
XMS Driver not installed

when i had this problem it was dodgy ram - clean up the contacts, swap it round or try someone elses

Yeah, himem.sys is there. It's just not loading because it's detecting bad RAM.

Daveincaps what do i do to correct this problem do i need ram.
how can i erase os and place win 98, i try it but it tells me that i need win 98 upgrade which i do not have where an i get it

How much RAM do you have? It should show on the posting screen when you first turn the computer on.

As Rayok says, you may need to clean the contacts and make sure it's in tight.

If possible post back the motherboard model # or, if it's a brand name like IBM, Gateway or Dell, post back the model of the computer. That way we can look up the type of RAM you need.

To do a fresh installation of 98 you can boot the computer with a 98 bootdisk, choose cdrom support and at the a:\> prompt type:

format c:

and enter. This will wipe everything off the hard drive. When it's done and with the 98 cd in the cdrom type:

e:\setup

and enter, where E: is your cdrom drive letter.
