I have some high-color icons (from Win XP) on my computer. Recently, they come in really crappy, as if I am in a 256-color display mode (but I am in true color). I've tried re-installing them but still no luck. My desktop looks like merde! As well, the high-color icons in my start menu give me the same trouble. But, the colors show fine on my display inside an application, even in the "Change Icon" box.
It seems to have happened around the time I installed Office XP, but I cannot be certain. During the install, before and after, I am running WindowBlinds version 3.4.
thx.

As a quick fix try clicking on your desktop to make it active and then hit F5 to Refresh the desktop. (or right click and select Refresh)
If no joy then proceed...
I suggest you delete your current shelliconcache file. It is located in C:\Windows
It is a hidden file so you have to have your PC set to show hidden files. (If you need to know how to then post back)You can simply move the file from C:\Windows to your desktop and then restart the PC or restart the PC in Safe Mode as this will remove the shelliconcache also.
Windows will rebuild the shelliconcache all by itself after one or two restarts in normal mode.
After you are happy you can simply delete the shelliconcache located on your desktop.
You may also need to increase the size of the shelliconcache file. Again post back for that.
Additionally, Window Blinds could be the problem. It uses many resources and may have tapped out your GDI.

Well, shelliconcache does not work (now my PC starts up with a green background before loading the desktop (instead of my last wallpaper).
Window Blinds does not stop it
F5 doesn't work either.
By the way, it's not just "My Computer" but shortcuts as well (like Grandtheft Auto III)
But Outlook shows up fine, but I dunno if it is high-color.

Just wonderring....
On the Effects tab in the Display Properties (right click on the Desktop) is the checkbox in front of "Show icons using all possible colors" ticked?

You know, I have over 30 computers, build them, do everything with them, etc. and I even found myself in the Effects tab about a thousand times trying to figure this out...
how come I didn't see it?Thanks though.

I have the same problem in Windows 2000. It started a while ago after Netmeeting crashed. U see, if u share your desktop using Netmeeting, it does it using 256 colours. When it crashes, it leaves everything in 256 colour mode.
This has happened to me before, but after a few days it suddenly corrected itself (I have no idea why or how).
Then Netmeeting crashed on me again yesterday, and now I'm back where i started.
I don't have a solution unfortunately, I've scoured the net for one but to no avail so far. I would imagine it's just a simple registry hack that's needed. Any help in addition to the above would be greatly appreciated!

In reply to my own post above :-) , I have found 2 possible solutions to this problem:
1st solution:1. Right click on Desktop > Properties > go to Effects menu and DESELECT "Show icons using all possible colors".
2. Delete the "ShellIconCache" file. (This is a HIDDEN temporary icon file in the Windows or WinNT folder. Windows will rebuild it when necessary)
3. Go back to the Effects menu and SELECT the "Show icons using all possible colors".If this doesnt work first time round, try it again, but reboot between steps 2 & 3.
2nd solution:1. Start Netmeeting (Start > Run > type "conf" (without the quotes) > press Enter)
2. Tools > Remote Desktop Sharing > Enable remote desktop sharing.
3. Now right-click on the Desktop-Sharing icon (NOT the Netmeeting icon) in the Taskbar / System Tray and select Exit.
4. Go back to Netmeeting > Tools > Remote Desktop Sharing > Disable remote desktop sharing > click OK.
5. Reboot.
6. Right click on Desktop > Properties > go to Effects menu and DESELECT "Show icons using all possible colors".
7. Go back to Effects menu and SELECT the "Show icon with all possable colors".You should now have 16/24 bit color icons back!
The 2nd solution works because Netmeeting's Desktop Sharing disables DirectX. When u disable Desktop Sharing, it re-enables DirectX, and gives u back ur full-colour icons!Hope this helps!
