Subject: Hide Icons In System Tray?
Comment:

Does anyone know of a method or application which will hide/remove icons from the Windows system tray?

Example of use: Task Scheduler always runs on my system, but i hardly ever need the icon to modify the schedule, therefore hiding this icon would give me more space on the taskbar.

Thanks,
James

James,

This may or may not be what you want to do, but you do have two options if those icon are bothering you. One, you can right-click the taskbar (on a seciton without anything on it) and go to properties. There you can autohide it so it only shows up when you drag your pointer to the bottom. Another option is to put your point on the top of the taskbar until you see the double arrow...then click and drag it down, thus shrinking it virtually out of view. This also hides you start button so be aware of that. If you have a keyboard with the windows icon on it your can hit that to bring up the stuff when you normally would hit the start button. All in all, you can adjust the settings to what you want, even whether something is displayed within the taskbar itself by configuring each individual icon you see. Right-click should be your friend!

Pierre, thanks for answering although I don't think that's the solution for me.

I use the taskbar a lot and would just like to minimize the clutter of icon in the system tray. I've removed all icons from applications that allow the option to remove their icon, but I still have a few icons lew which i rarely 'actively' use.

Examples:
Task Scheduler - i use it, but rarely need to change or disable it via the tray
DFX - Winamp plugin the runs when winamp runs, but i never adjust the properties so i never need it in the tray
MemTurbo - Has a keyboard shortcut, so i never use the tray icon

...Things like that. I'd just like to be able to remove/hide these icons, while still using the programs.

Once again, thank you,
James

Get yourself a copy of the free program StartupCop from ZDNet.com. It will allow you to hide any systray icons by a enable/disable capability or help you to pack any systray icon for permanent removal.

Hum, thank you, but still not a solution for me. If i disable the tray icons, the applications are also disabled. I'm looking for more of a hiding method (i.e. remove the icon from the tray to reduce clutter, but leave the application running.)

I don't know, maybe i'm asking for the best of both worlds here. I should just consider re-writing the system tray applet. =)

For Win98 the SysTray Icons are listed at

C:\Windows\ApplicationData\Microsoft\
InternetExplorer\QuickLaunch

Just right click and delete the shortcut from there which will remove the icon from the tray

Laura & Kelly,

Thank you for the help, although Kelly's advise was ultimately what i was looking for.

I had done several web searches for any application concerning the system tray and came up with nothing, but the URL you supplier for TraySaver is exactly the solution i wanted. Thank you so much!

James

Incase anyone else is monitoring these messages looking for the same solution i was, here is my final solution:

I downloaded TraySaver from the URL above to remove most of the icons from the tray, but TraySaver either leaves a small pseudo-tray window open or places it's icon in the tray!

Of course, since TraySaver won't remove its oun icon to it's pseudo-tray window, i had to use another program. I downloaded OuttaSight from rosa.simplenet.com/software/oos.

I setup OuttaSight to hide the TraySaver's psudo-tray window and configured Outta sight to minimize itself to the system tray. Then i went back and setup TraySaver to remove the OuttaSight icon.

Presto! My desired solution in a round-about way:

1. TraySaver removes the icons from the tray to it's pseudo-tray
2. OuttaSight hides TraySaver's pseudo-tray and minimizes itself
3. TraySaver removes OuttaSight's minimized icon to it's hidden pseudo-tray.

Note: You may be wondering, if all the applications are hidden, how do i get to them if ever i need them? Solution: OuttaSight has a hotkey option to hide/unhide each program. Therefore, unhides OuttaSight and unhides TraySaver's pseudo-tray.

Once again, thanks to everyone for their time and assistance. =)

Hum... Looks like you can't use greater-than or less-than symbols in your messages. (HTML tags?)

What i was trying to say above was that pressing Ctrl + Alt + O unhides OuttaSight and pressing Ctrl + Alt + T unhides TraySaver's pseudo-tray
