Reply: (edit)What OS are you using? If you are using Win98, you can do this by going into the display properties. Under the 'effects' tab, there is a check box to 'hide icons when viewing the desktop as a webpage'. If you check this box, and then start the active desktop, voila, all the icons will be hidden and you will only see the background.

Reply: (edit)get the program tweakui from microsoft web site. from there you can do many interesting things with your system, as well as hiding all the icons on your desktop. Personally I dislike all active desktop related stuff, simply because it's an admins nightmare (my nightmare that is).

Reply: (edit)Go here: http://geocities.com/SiliconValley/Circuit/9810/Sofffffffware.html and search for:
Active Icons Icon Digger Icon Snatch I use all three and can find *any* icon on my PC and can Create/Edit new ones at will, then put them anywhere I want. And make many other changes to my Desktop and/or any icons anywhere. (All those f's in the link are *NOT* a typo)! Son of Spy's site is LOADED with untold goodies and links to even more. Don't let his 'name' throw you off, he is very privacy oriented.

Reply: (edit)If you want a simple click to toggle program get Cool Desktop from http://www.coolbananas.com.au/ Find the version 1 which is free. Run the program and it installs an icon near your clock. Click the icon to toggle desktop icons on/off. The presence of the icon blocks taskbar auto-hide. You can remove the icon after you have turned off desktop icons. To restore the icons navigate to the directory where you installed the .exe
