Hidden files that are put on by the OS (operating System) is a way to keep someone from tampering with them. This is done because some hidden file are necessary for the PC to run smoothly. YOU can also mark a file (or a whole folder) to be hidden for the same reason the OS does. If you want to hide a file or folder just click the right mouse button on the folder or file and select hidden from the drop down menu that will appear. computer viruses can also take advantage of this feature. That is why it is a very good idea to install a Firewall and Anti-Virus program on your PC. Especially if you are going to be on the Internet. Have a good one!

Those are files that for one reason or another are kept hidden or invisible to the regular use of the computer. A lot of those on windows are meant to protect you from accidentally erasing them since they are needed. So before you start deleting any file make sure that is not something that you might need and regret not having it later. You could change the properties of those files so that they are visible to you if you want to check what they are for. On windows 98 [95 is similar] go to start, settings, folder options and click on the tab view on the top and then on the files and folders section click on the circle for Show all files. After that apply and check on ok. See what those files are about but DON'T delete anything that you don't know what is it for. Good luck. Francisco

Hidden files are files that some $$$geeks$$$ have decided you (the $$$ spender) shouldn't know about, see, understand or be aware of... the same people that created the Start button to Shut Down... go figure!

SHOW All Files, by all, and any means... you spent the money, it's your machine, YOU should exercise some control, even at your own risk.

While seemingly-well-intentioned, think about it... is that policy really for YOUR benefit? You believe that?

Gimme a break. Do you pick up soap in the shower?

Anything that one PC operator can hide, another PC operator can UN-hide.

I think I know my PC's as well as Smaug did of the hoard of riches he slept on. Me and my OS's hidden files have a pact. I leave them alone.....They leave me alone!

Wow, you guys seem to understand DLL's. So I bring you a different problem. I couldn't change subjects... I need to delete a dll that is in use by windows. It is causing major havoc with my computer. It is SOS Kidproof. We have gotten rid of ever part of the program all through the computer including the registry except for one file, msoss.dll ! Witch is in use by the windows system, this file is a hidden file also. This file is (from the quick view of it) partially an exe that runs in the sub gui system of windows. When ever kidproof finds something dumb like microfts ad on there homepage for convertable cars saying "Lets go topless for the summer" it prevents access for the day. (I saw the ad on a different computer.) I really need your help. This file may do other things but at this point we are willing to risk it to get rid of it!!! Anyone help please.

Thank you The Cingles!
