Having a most unusual error message popping up every 30 seconds or so.....in win95.....window titled "hidden application" message is "Socket initialization failed" These keep opening on top of each other.....have Norton running as well as AVG 6.0.....can't see anything obvious in Sys.ini or WIN.ini but I don't really know what to look for anyway!!

Any help is greatly appreciated......

I'm not sure when you installed either one of the Antivirus programs but I'm going to guess you haven't always had them running at the same time and if that's true is it safe to assume this message starting happening after you installed one of them while already having the other installed? What I'm getting at is that every antivirus program I know of requires that no other antivirus program be running--especially during the install. Windows NT can sometimes handle both since it operates in protected mode but even then there's problems sometimes. Try disabling one of them; even better, uninstall AVG since it's a piece of junk anyway and see what happened. AVG almost destroyed my computer and those of two of my friends. All three of us uninstalled it and we stopped getting weird messages like the ones you're getting.

I have exactly the same problem. I'm using Windows 98, and McAfee antivirus (does not detect any problem)but the popup window keeps on coming as soon as Windows loads. Please, I need some probable explanation.
