Im having this problem with my laptop.
This is a NEC VERSA LXi. The problem is everytime when I turn the computer on it wont load the windows and it shows a message; " Your hibernation file is either missing or corrupt " then it restarts by itself. Is there a way to fix this using the normal windows 98se CD, or do i have to install a fresh windows?
Any help will be appreciated. Thanks

I never use hibernation.

But you may be able to avoid this by going into ControlPanel and going to PowerOptions and disabling.

If this by itself doesn't get it, you may need to manually delete the file.

Before attempting file deletion, wait for somebody who is up to speed on this. It might involve a reg key.

Let us know.

I can't get into Windows, before it gets ot windows the computer restarts by itself. I tried safe mode and it doesn't work, it does the same as when I start windows normally.

Boot to DOS and go to the root folder of the boot drive and delete hyberfil.sys.

It will be a hidden file so you will need to use the Attrib function to un-hide it. That should allow Windows to boot normally then go into Power Options and disable hibernation.

I always found hibernation to be a bit of a hit and a miss affair with Windows 98. You are better of without it.

Can you get into Safe Mode and disable in Power Management from there?

You either hold Control key while booting, or if that doesn't work tap F8 while booting (purests would say wait until it says Starting Windows but it can be tricky to catch). You then select Safe Mode from the startup menu.

I have no Power Options in Control Panel on my W98SE but I do have Power Management.

I have no hyberfil.sys file on my machine either. Maybe I'm just the unlucky one, or could this be something only found on Windows XP?

Hi Derek,

Seems like in every ver of win the menus and hot keys are different enough to throw a wrench in the works.

Classic exampl:

In w2k CP you've got 'networking and dial-up'.

In other ver [98?] you've got 'dial-up'.

Still another has "telephony' [?~]

What is telephony? Too frightening to contemplate.

Thanks for the info.

Everything is just fine now. Thx for interest.

Yeah maybe stick-in-the-mud folk like me (in 9x time warp) do have the occasional advantage LOL.

This is a specific problem for some NEC Versa laptops. Here's the lowdown, direct from the NEC support site:

How can I get rid of the message "Missing Hibernation File" appearing during the POST?

Situation

The error message "Missing Hibernation File" is displayed during POST with Windows 2000 or Windows Millennium Edition (ME) installed. Why does this message appear and how can I prevent this?

Details

Windows 2000 and Windows ME use their own hibernation file or partition methods.

Resolution

The best solution is to disable the Auto Save To File feature in the BIOS, to do so:
Press the <F2> key at boot to enter the BIOS Setup.
Select Power Management Setup.
Set the Auto Save To File option to Disabled.
Press <Esc> to go back to Main Screen.
Select Save Settings and Exit.
Select Yes to save the changes.
The error message should not appear anymore.

Had the same problem on a client's machine, this fixed it :)
