Subject: HHCTRL.OCX |
Comment: I have just upgraded to MS Office 2000 Premium on a Windows 98 Machine. Starting 'Help' in Word 2000 I am able to type in a topic (in the Help wizard) as soon as I start to open one of the topics that the Wizard suggests I get: MSOHELP caused an invalid page fault in module HHCTRL.OCX at 0257:5d332a4c. Registers: EAX=c95e5f00 CS=0257 EIP=5d332a4c EFLGS=00010206 EBX=00000ab0 SS=025f ESP=0064e498 EBP=0064f540 ECX=00020000 DS=025f ESI=01bb2a60 FS=6687 EDX=01bb2a60 ES=025f EDI=0064fb48 GS=64b7 Bytes at CS:EIP: ff 50 28 8b 47 08 3d 3a fd ff ff 75 0c 53 56 e8 Stack dump: 00000ab0 000003ee 0064fb48 0064f548 000085b8 0064f594 71501e6a 0045a674 7152012f 0045a670 70bd2174 0045a654 71501f29 0045a670 80004005 0064e500 I have tried deleting that HHCTRL file, reinstalling Office 2000 and I have run 'Detect and repair' - all to no avail. Any suggestions available? Please e-mail me at alexandrc@aol.com Thank You

Reply: (edit)Most invalid page faults are caused when the file you are opening calls on a file already in use,in your case HHCTRL.OCX. Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys and then press Del. Look in the box and see if you see anything running that may be related to Office 2000. Something may run at startup like the shortcut bar or Office Find Fast, that use the file. Try disabling the items in your startup folder, and restarting you machine, then try again. Only thing I have to offer. Office 2000 being new, it may be as simple as that.

Reply: (edit)You need to replace your Hhctrl.ocx in your systems folder with the Hhctrl.ocx provided on the MS2000 disk. This is found in the system file of the MS2000 disk. Simply copy and paste and replace into your own sytem folder

Reply: (edit)I feel a little "had" here by Excite Free Internet Service.....the requirements did NOT SAY that I needed Windows 2000 .. so I load the IPS cancel my main IPS (luckily have another) and get the same HHCRTL.OCX Need to update msg that everyone else is getting. What do they want - for me to run out and buy Windows 2000? Thinking of dumping Excite at this point...I'm not a computer geek and not happy with the situation. Will certainly like a response.....thankd

Reply: (edit)As I was reading the Online help foe Excite's FreeWorld it did talk about the need for updated DirectX drivers. I was receiving the error until I loaded the latest version of DirectX (Ver 7.0A). This is for Win98 and Win95 machines. It can be found at: http://download.microsoft.com/download/win98SE/Update/7.0a/W9X/EN-US/DX7Aeng.exe

Reply: (edit)My daughter experienced the same problem when she was installing AltaVista free internet. It asks for newer HHCTRL.OCX. I installed the same AltaVista on one of my computers, and had no problems. She is running Win95 on a 486. My other computer is a Cyrix 133, running Win98. I copied my HHCTRL.OCX to disk, and will replace hers with mine, on her computer tomorrow. That should be the solution, since it worked on my computer with the Win98 installed.

Reply: (edit)I too downloaded CuteMX. Once I had installed it I attempted to run it. The computer refused to run the program, saying I needed an HHCTRL.OCX file. I had a friend e-mail me a version of said file, and I attempted to c&p it into the cutemx program. The program starts, but upon opening it says I have performed and illegal action and instantly shuts down. Could someone help? Thanks
