I would say that you have set it wrong in the BIOS or it auto dtected wrong. Reboot press del to view your bios config. Go to intergrated peripherials and change your hdd to the correct size.

it sounds like your mb doesn't support drives over 8 gigs
go to the drive maker's site & d/l their disk managment program
maxtor for example has a prog called maxblast which will override the bios & let u use the whole hdd

Andy, check this site:

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q153/5/50.asp?LN=EN-US&SD=gn&FR=0&qry=Windows%2098%20fdisk&rnk=3&src=DHCS_MSPSS_gn_SRCH&SPR=W98

It may help answer some of your questions. Also, when I installed a 10 GB HD in my computer, I had the same problem. I can't find the info right now, but at the time I was told that it had to do with a limitation of the Win98 fdisk. I downloaded a Win ME bootdisk at bootdisk.com and used it to fdisk the HD. The entire 10 GB was then recognized. I then switched back to the Win98 bootdisk to format, sys, and install Windows, all without a problem.

Hope this helps.

Dave

jeromy's statement of Maxblast was an example. If your hard drive isn't a Maxtor, you should ~try~ to obtain the equivelant(sp?) program/Bios overlay from the manufacturer of the drive you have.
