this is the current status of my C drive
Used Space: 3,136,348,160 bytes 292GB
Free Space: 270,917,632 btyes 258MB
so i was just wondering what or some typical ways to free up some wasted space.

You can obviously delete programs that are no longer being used, clip art if you are using it, delete any *.tmp files on your computer and any files in c:\windows\temp (preferrably after rebooting)

You can delete wallpaper files, sound files and screen saver files that you don't use. If you don't use the Windows help files, you can back them up (for safekeeping - just in case you want them back later) and delete those - roughly 10MB there. Look for the .txt files that come with programs. For instance Readme.txt, Vendor.txt, Whatsnew.txt and others like it that give general information about the programs. These should be read, but then you can delete them. Make sure you delete all programs you no longer use. There a bunch of the smaller Windows programs in the Add/Remove Programs - Windows Setup tab. Also, when you download programs, the setup files that you initially downloaded, can be backed up then deleted after the programs are installed and running.

Don't forget good old Scandisk & Defrag if you haven't done this for a while. I've seen scandisk free up 50Mb in space wrongly allocated to files. You could clear the temporary internet files folder as well, and either set this to delete them automatically or reduce the disk space available to them, from the browser settings.

Store files you don't use in compressed format. You'll need a program like PKZip or WinZip. The space this new program takes up can be compensated for by the space it will save you by using it.
Files (especially text files) can be compressed quite a lot. Example: I have 5 doc files of size 11 MB uncompressed. Using PKZip they consume only 2 MB on my PC. They still open from Explorer just as easily as if they weren't compressed. They just don't eat up as much space.
There are online pages that help people do exactly what you want. Try a search for sites with Tips & Tricks (for your system).

If you have a CD writer, then you could dump loads of stuff that you use less frequently onto CD.
If you have lots of text files that you refer to, then you could print hard copies of them, and delete the electronic files.
You could stop browsing the web for pornography - that stuff clogs up your hard drive like nothing else.
You could uninstall applications/games that you no longer use.
You could run a "delete" lottery where twice a week you randomly delete 6 out of a selected 49 files (and a bonus one)
You could buy another PC and network it as a server to the one you currently use.
Install another hard drive. (people here can help you do this)
The zip idea above is a very very good one. You can still open and alter all your files straight from the zipped folder, and dump them immediately back in there.
You could stop being so greedy for space and force yourself to adopt a more restrained approach to your C drive.
Hope this helps

You can also go to WWW.ZDNET.COM and do a search for hard drive cleaners and space finders.
There are a lot of programs to download for FREE and use for 30 day limit. But all you need to do is run the program once to clean your hard drive and free up space.
