How do I keep the set up I have now (Windows ’98) and then have a duel boot up with Windows XP? EASY instructions please as I am still a novice.
Can I keep the operating system (Windows ’98) as it is on my main C drive and have the XP on my second drive D as there is not much space left on my C drive or do I have to make space on my C drive and put them both on there? What I will be using in BOTH cases is the upgrade package for windows XP.

ok heres what u do
Start to install windows xp *if it asks if u want to upgrade, select no...or the other option* if you continue the installation you should come to a step where it asks you which directry you want to install it to...(although you cannot install winxp to drive because its your cd drive unless your cd drive is a different letter... example drive E) select drive D and your windows xp installation drive and continue with the installation
win xp will install to that drive and everything should be fine.

win 98 to be on drive c:\
xp will need to be on drive d: or your second drive.
to access the files on each drive from each operating system, you must format and install with fat 32 for both os's.
if all you have is a win xp upgrade disk, then i'm not sure how to do the 2nd drive setup or if the xp upgrade will setup the dual boot for ya. some othe fella will no doubt jump in here with that answer

You can put XP on the D: drive. Just be careful when you do the install to make sure that you don't overlay win98. Take your time during the install and read the instructions carefully.

Thanks.....Ok so I have my upgrade XP on drive D. So how do I select which system I want to use each time I switch on as my computer will always go to the C drive and load '98?

Selecting Operating System dual booting XP .
To specify the default operating system for startup.
Open System in Control Panel.
On the Advanced tab, under Startup and Recovery, click Settings.
Under System startup, in the Default operating system list, click the operating system you want
to start when you turn on or restart your computer.
Select the Display list of operating systems for check box, and then type the number of seconds
you want the list displayed before the default operating system starts automatically.

Another way .
If your bios supports this .
If you want XP , just go into the bios and specify none for the win98/Primary master HD. ( assuming you have 98 on the Primary drive )
If you want 98 , specify none for the xp/secondary master and reenable the Primary master.

XP will set up a dual boot option that will be displayed on your screen when you boot. You will be able to choose win98 or XP.
