Subject: Help with DOS sound and joystick
OS: Windows 98SE
CPU/Ram: 192/PII
Model/Manufacturer: Gateway
Comment:

I have 2 separate problems (First being sound and second being joystick) and I am splitting them up for ease:

Sound problem:
I am having trouble getting sound to work with my system while playing DOS games in MS-DOS mode. I tried the SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H1 setting in AUTOEXEC.BAT and it doesn't work, I get a PC beep-like sound instead of the normal game sound for some reason, the sound works fine under Windows however.

My sound card is:

Manufacturer: Avance (Avance logic, Inc.)
ALS4000 Audio Device (WDM)
Date 6-4-2001

What can I do to have regular sound for the game in DOS mode?

Joystick problem:
I have a Microsoft SideWinder 3D pro joystick and I installed the drivers for it and tested and set it up in the Game controller settings in the Control panel and it works fine however it does not work in DOS games under Windows or DOS mode, I even enabled Joystick controls in the game and still nothing. What can I do to fix this? Also, this is probably a stupid question but which setting is the analog setting at the bottom of the joystick? The one with one dot or the one with two?

Thanks,

Try disabling 'PnP OS' in cmos/bios setup. Did you install the drivers/files necessary for dos playback?

Is the sound device integrated into the MBoard? If so, you may need to also enable the gameport portion of the sound list in the BIOS. You also need to set the resources in the listing for the integrated sound.

I am not a gamer but I believe you also need to load dos drivers into some part of the memory for the joystick.

It's a soundcard that can be removed from the motherboard in those slots in the back of the tower.

What would those drivers be for loading the joystick and are they needed under Windows?

Thanks,

Try Googling the phrase "Microsoft sidewinder joystick driver".

To run in pure dos you need to run a file or files--probably from autoexec.bat--to get it going. These are two different downloads which look like they set up the card for dos.

http://www.soundcard-drivers.com/dr...

http://vsynchmame.mameworld.net/als...

You should check the documentation for your joystick to see if it contains dos setup. I'm not sure if the above downloads do that.

I already downloaded and installed the joystick driver. According to the program, it's version 2.

I will try those drivers as well.

What can I do about the joystick? It's all enabled in the device manager and reports no problems or conflicts.

Thanks,

Does the joystick software have a utility to check the joystick controls? If so, and that checks out OK, then it must be that the game is not looking for the joystick at the correct address. Maybe the joystick and/or game instructions will help.

Yes it has a program like that, however it only has pre selected games as games that are playable and I tried adding a new one but it didn't work. How can I add new games.

Thanks,

You may be able to program buttons in a new game. Only way to know is to try.

I tried programming buttons but still no luck. Another question, how does the joystick program match up the name of the game with the actual game?

Thanks,

Probably provided by the game to Microsoft.

As I told you in response #2 I am not a gamer. I vaguely recall from when by boys played that you could setup profiles in the game. perhaps the software and drivers for the Sidewinder have options too.

Yeah, I've never set up a PC with a joystick so all I can offer is general info. Playing dos games in windows has always been kind of iffy, as windows can change the hardware parameters. When that happens the card may not respond to the game. That's why you often need to disable PnP OS in cmos/bios setup. That keeps windows from changing the bios settings.

With the joystick not working in dos I'd think either the port isn't enabled in dos or the joystick isn't compatible with dos.

Why has no given the answer to the sound problem yet?

Go into the device manager, open up the driver for your sound car, and wa-la there is all the addess information you will need. Just set the SETBLASTER command to those numbers. That was too easy.

You might even have a "legacy sound driver" and additional addresses and interupts will be in there for you to have at.
