Hello Everyone,

I am at my wits end with my pc right now, I am having so much trouble with it. I recently reformatted my pc, and now i am have issues with my display settings. Prior to the reformat i was able to have 256 colors and change the screen settings through the display options. Now there is no selection for 256 and the slider for screen size does not move at all. I have gone into the system through the control panel and tried updating the driver and it says its using the best driver. What do I do???

Thanks in advance
Sean

What is the brand name of your computer? Can you identify the video card and provide the model of that?

If you are using Windows 98 native display drivers that is most likely your problem, you need to install the appropriate driver (prefarably the latest) for your display adapter.

Doesn't mean much.

Is your system an OEM brand (Getaway/Dull)?

OR

Custom built?

Depending on your response to the above, you may or may not need to pop the side cover of your computer.

Whenever you are unable to set to higher colors (especially after format) it is almost always a driver issue. If you have no CD for the card then the trick is to search Google - apparently in your case it is a Trident 3dimage975.

I went through this process and from the information given it appears to be this one:
DRIVER DOWNLOAD WEBSITE

But by all means check it out first.

What happens after you unzip the file?

I was about to ask the same question as Jennifer.

Not so sure about that website I gave you. When I clicked further it didn't seem too helpful and websites that tout dating stuff can be dubious. I agree that this driver seems tricky to find.

I realise you've looked at the card but it still might be worth downloading this freebie (which gives your machines hardware info):
EVEREST

Look under Windows/Video. It might give some additional info or even a website for the drivers.

I got told by a friend that i should use dirctX 5.0 before having any newer ones, anybody else know ne thing about it?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with the link Derek posted in response #8.

If you are not familiar with extracting and manually 'pathing' the driver update installer to extracted folder, you should get someone that does.

In fact I can't get anything to work on that link I posted in #8 so maybe it's on my Restricted Sites/Hosts or something.

You are not intended to open dat files if they are for data. Not sure about DirectX query (I don't know what version you have on there right now).

If I could get the download I would give you the procedure but as things stand I can only generalise.

Often you put all the files into one folder then double click the .exe file.

The other way is to go via Device Manager/Display and use "Update drivers". Sometimes it is necessary to go against the normal recommendation and display a list of drivers. You can then use "Have Disk" and point it to the folder that contains the drivers.

i had to reformat once again, and before i did any window updates i downloaded that file again, unzipped it, went into the device manager and clicked on update driver to the file where i unzipped it to, and it worked like a charm, it asked for my windows 98 cd to be put in and installed in 2 minutes flat.

Thanks again everyone
