First of all I bought this computer in October of 99 from the home shopping network and I realize what a big mistake that was. It's the same type systemax computer they sell on the infomercials that are supposed to be so great but they are not.

Last October I was having problems galore like blue screen, illegal operations messages. This was happening online off line, you name the error and we had it. Took it to comp USA and they said it was a bad memory chip. What ever the chip in this computer is they told me it was going out of style and they didn't have one in a package but they had some new computers with this chip going back to the company and they could take one out and sell it to me for $10. I agreed because I had no clue what to do about finding this chip for them. Maybe that was a line or not I don't know but they wiped everything out and put in this new chip and I also had a secondary 40 gig hard drive added to the 20 already here and I had them take the ram up from 64 to 256. When all was said and done computer was running better than new but now the last month it's acting up again but so far It only seems to be AOL. I have not tried to reinstall AOL yet because I have a feeling it's the computer causing all this again and I just wanted some opinions.

What's going on is after surfing the net a bit I get booted by the blue screen and when I click on the AOL icon to sign on again I get the blue screen and can't get in. This goes round and round and I have to reboot to get back into the AOL sign on screen. Then after the reboot I click on the AOL icon and after the sign on screen I get illegal operation for msbb but have no clue what that is. When I cancel that out and click sign on it starts to dial and then cuts out and reboots and goes through scan disk. Then after all that I can sign on and surf for a while, sometimes happens again sometimes not. I checked under find files and folder and it says msbb is in windows, I found it but properties give me no clue what it is. Not even sure if this is the problem or if computer is just screwy because of bad memory chip again? Also the other day after this happened and I rebooted at the windows desktop got a message saying windows had to fix registry files and needed to reboot, then it said something about backing up files, finished and took me to the desk top. This happened twice but have not seen that since and even when I had the bad memory chip I never saw that message before. I did a lot of stuff off line yesterday with none of these problems but I know when I did have the bad memory chip that also messed up AOL so that is why I don't want to reinstall AOL unless I know for sure it could be the cause.

When I first got the computer AOL was the first service I used and I had none of the problems that people complain about. Only started having AOL problems when I had the bad memory chip otherwise when computer is working right I have no AOL problems. I clear out my temp and temp Internet files weekly and I run my maintenance and Norton update weekly.
Any ideas welcome and any info on what msbb is and if it could be causing this appreciated I am using Win 98.

First, just to say it, since some poster is going to feel the universe is not complete unless it is said, "Get rid of AOL." (But ignore that mindless "advice" and don't get rid of it -- it's really an OK program.)

After some hunting around I uncovered the following about "msbb", which apparently is some sort of spyware or other obnoxious application:

1) MSBB.exe can be removed via the "add/remove programs" option, found in the Windows Control Panel, the name to look for is "180Solutions" or "nCASE". OR

2) Use the free and excellent Ad-aware parasite removal tool to get rid of it completely, available at http://www.lavasoftusa.com

Try and see if getting rid of it helps with your problems.

Thanks, I didn't think of it being spy ware. I will get rid of it and then see if that helps. If not then I will reinstall AOL and if it still persists I will have to have this thing looked at again. We have the HP office jet g85 printer that we paid $800 for when it was just out a couple years ago and I haven't checked if it will work with XP so I am not anxious to just buy a new tower right now especialy since I had some of those upgrades done. I love AOL and would use nothing else. I have made lots of friends in the AOL communities and since I am into photography they have a great graphics arts community that is the best place on AOL for me. Thanks for the help.

I can't find anything related to what you mentioned in add remove programs and after posting this I had the problem again so I couldn't download that program you mentioned. I do have Kazaa on here and I just found out you can get a version without spyware so I need to do that. I have a feeling that this is very computer realted and not caused by that. This time I wrote down the fatal exception errors, will they help me detected anything? First of all here is the one I get when I get booted from AOL.

0028: C0005338 in VXD VMM (01) + 00004338 Then when I try to click on AOL after this I get 0028: C027F0E7 in VXD VMM (06) + 000030E7.
Then when I click restart it goes to the command screen and wants me to boot into command prompt but I don't know what to do when I get there so I CTRL delete and then when rebooting it says windows found an error in your system files and restored a recent backup of the files to fix the problem then I say OK and it boots into Windows. Anybody have a clue what's going on please.
