Subject: help with Compaq QuickRestore CD
Comment:

I was halfway through the QuickRestore CD when I aborted it to start over. Now, when I try to run it, it will hang on the 1st CD and never ask for the 2nd CD. I can insert another CD and reinsert CD1, and then it asks for the next CD to continue, but it will just say "Working..." and stay there for hours. What can I do to "reset" this to get it to work? Would a regular Windows 98 CD work? There is nothing on the hard drive, so I need something bootable. Please help. Thanks.

You might have to do fdisk /mbr since the first restore went bad.

Compaq restores can be quite tricky.
If you have corrupted files on your hard drive back up (which Compaq puts there and you never even know it) then this is the exact thing that will happen. I have done it a few times and it happened just as you said. Once it got the whole way through, only to restore it with the complety corrupted copy I was trying to get rid of!!
Best thing to do is to use a standard win98 boot disk and remove your partitions by using the fdisk command.
Now when you insert the cd in the tray it will force the Compaq disk to create a new copy on the hard drive from your cd. This will be time consuming though because the disk will have to format/partition your drives so Compaq has somewhere to put your files at. This should work just fine to get you up and running.
Just one other tip about those Compaq restore disks:
If you have more than one cd rom drive on your pc, when Compaq tells you to put it in one drive, put it in the opposite drive. See, in dos the drive letters reverse themselves. It took me almost and hour to get the Compaq disk to work right the first time I did it because of this little problem.
Hope this was of some help to you. If you would like further one on one help, drop me a line, I'll be happy to help in whatever way I can.
Terri
