Comment:

I am starting a home LAN with cable modem and router. The router indicates both computers are linked but only one hits the net.
Computer1: running Win98, hits the net OK.

Computer2: (problem) running Win95, router and ethernet LEDs indicate the link is OK but I can't hit the router. I have tried entering the router IP address to no avail. Running winipcfg idicates "Fatal Error Can't find IP configuration". I have checked the set-up procedures as per the manuals and everything seems fine.
Can anyone help me

right-click on the Network Neighborhood icon on the desktop, and click on properties. Is TCP/IP listed there? If not, add it. If it is, remove it, reboot, and add it again.

thanks for the suggestion zippy - but I'm still getting the same message. Another friend suggested that I may not have the latest release of the TCP/IP. Anybody know where I could find the latest TCP/IP download for an Win95 machine? All I could find at microsoft was upgrades to fix a TCP/IP stack problem tha led to freeze ups.

I don't think your friend is on the right track.

I've seen this with win95 many times before, it seems to be caused by a corrupt or incomplete installation of networking drivers and protocols. Try booting to safe mode and remove the network card from device manager. When you reboot, windows should detect and install the needed files. Also, be sure you're using the correct, latest drivers for your network card.

Thanks zippy, but still no.
I removed the device from the device manager in safe mode and rebooted, but windows didn't seem to find anything new. I checked the system and it did not show a card, so I had win95 search for new hardware - nothing. Contol panel>>Internet Options>>connections>>Lan settings no longer showed the TCP/IP protocol, so I reloaded it, windows pulled files from the Win95 disk (I left the newer versions intact) restarted, and still nothing. My network card is a brand new linksys 10/100 Ethernet LAN card and I used the driver disk that came with it. I'm kinda surprised.
Any more ideas?

if you removed the device, and windows did not re-detect it, then it is definitely not installed correctly.

what version of win95 are you running?

Help About under windows explorer doesn't list a windows version. It just says windows 95. Where else could I look?

Hey I got it zippy.
Turns out in the safe mode un-install I missed the device card listing under "other".
Reinstalled succesfully.
Thanks a million man!
