my windowns can't start up after I installed this software called D-link..which is suppose to let me use a wireless adapter. I can't get into setup to put it on safe mode and I also tried rebooting it several times. what do I do? please help!

Hi Lisa,
Where does the computer hang at? At the windows welcome screen? Or is the screen blank with just a blinking cursor? Did you install any hardware ( the adapter)? If you did try removing it. I dont know if you unplugged anything or not but make sure that something like keyboard and mouse connections didnt get reversed. Post back with more info if you can.

You have to install the software, then reboot and insert the hardware. Is that what you did?

I didn't understand this bit:
"I can't get into setup to put it on safe mode".If you tap F8 whilst booting do you get to the startup menu? If so, what happens when you select Safe Mode?

well...my computer is pretty old...its just all black...without a blinking cursor. I checked the mouse and keyboard and made sure it was plugged in properly. I removed the software I installed earlier on and its still pitched black. The light is on but it doesn't seem like anything is loading. and Yes, I installed the software, then I went to shut down and then I inserted the wireless adapter. After that, nothing seems to load. I also pressed F8 but nothing happened; setup didn't show up or anything

Is your listing correct? You only show 32 meg RAM and WIn98 in your signature for your system. If not please tell us about th emachine, age, any other problems, anything else that might have happened before this difficulty? It was totally fine yesterday?

You have to "keep tapping" F8 whilst booting to get to startup menu. Strictly you hit it just before it says "Windows is starting" but the keep tapping idea normally works fine and is easier. On some machines you just hold the Ctrl key down whilst booting.

I'm not so sure myself. my dad bought this computer a long time ago. my brother said the computer either has 64 or 32MB. he can't remember. I think its a pentium 2. It was fine before I installed the software into my computer. and I tried tapping the F8 button several times but nothing happened. and oh ya..its all black..the top left saids 32768 KB OK....and the bottom right saids Compax Deskpro 4000. when I used this computer before...it usually says that for a few seconds then it loads into windows but now it just stays like that.

Press F10 to get into setup. 32 meg RAM is not much (enough, but slow) for Win98

Hi Lisa,
I noticed in your reply that you said problem occured after plugging in the adapter. Is this a card that plugs into a slot internal or a usb type? Did you remove the adapter then try rebooting? You may have bumped something inside or you may have some how caused some sort of hardware failure. Like you said it's a old pc and probaly not worth trying to do anymore unless it's a simple fix. The Compaq 4000 was a flaky computer to begin with. Sorry.

Don't just give up on it. Take out the wireless adapter and string an ethernet cable. That should work just fine.
What are the requirements for D-Link card? Do you meet those?

actually.. I did take out the wireless adapter...and my computer does meet the requirements for the D-Link card. Its just that its just a black screen when I turn on the computer and I can't into setup or anything.

Might just be a CMOS battery ( a couple of $$) or it needs a new power supply (could get a used one from a dead Compaq). It just depends how much you are wanting to spend to get it going again.
I don't think they were terrible machines, at all!
