Subject: help using 'IrfanView' pleaseOS: Win95aCPU/Ram: 120 mhz/72 RAM |
Comment: Good evening, I downloaded 'IrfanView' earlier today in hopes of being able to change some 'bitmap' files to 'jpeg' format. Three hours later my eyes are 'popping out of my head' and I am no closer in mastering it than I was when I originally installed the program. What I am trying to do is take three 'wallpapers' I have previously downloaded and convert them from 'bitmap' to 'jpeg'. These three wallpapers take up to almost a MB each. Someone told me this program could reduce their size considerably and I would still be able to use them as wallpaper. If this is true I would really appreciate someone explaining how to perform this switch in 'newbie' terms. Thanks and Regards, Phil

Reply: (edit)Hi y'all, Hi phil, The easiest way is to use the ADCsee, program..(Convert feature) With IrfanView, just bring up the BMP image, then choose the third icon from the left, in the toolbar,(save as)Click, and save as a JPG. You will be asked if you want to rewrite the file..Click yes...Make sure when you save the file, that you are in the correct directory, where the BMP file is located...You can also change the size, using the Resize/samples feature, from the Images Tab, in the toolbar.. Post back if you need any more help... Hope this helps Happy Holidays beansoup

Reply: (edit)I don't believe that Win95A supports JPGs as wallpaper - only BMPs. You can use the 'save as' feature in IrfanView and choose whichever format - JPG files are compressed and can be considerably smaller than the original BitMap file. Generally it's better not to overwrite the original file - otherwise you'll be unable to undo any unwelcome changes, but files can have the same 'name' if they have different extensions (BMP, JPG, PCX etc). You could also select 'set as wallpaper' under IrfanView's options menu, but this creates "IrfanView_Wallpaper.bmp" in your Windows directory, which is more or less what you started with.

Reply: (edit)Morning ripper, beansoup and jboy, Thanks for replies and information. Ripper: Thanks for the tutorial on IrfanView. It is well presented. Maybe I am just getting too old to have it 'soak into my aging grey matter.' As for sitting back and not answering anymore ..no way! Yours was an excellent choice of a site for more information. Keep it up! beansoup: I tried your solution but to be honest I can't figure out how you bring up the BMP image in IrfanView. One of the images I am trying to convert is entitled Twin Towers, which I use as 'Wallpaper' from time to time. It is located in my Wallpaper section in the 'Display' feature with the actual file located on C:\Windows. I guess what I need is the secret to bringing up the needed BMP in Irfanview. jboy: Thanks for your addded imput. I also tried your method of just 'setting as wallpaper', but you're right, you are really not much better off that way, as far as the size of the file. Everyone: Thanks for your continued interest and support for this 'aging' computer "whiz" ..lol Regards, Phil

Reply: (edit)Hi beansoup, Thanks for reply. I think I am ready to throw in the towel on this procedure. Maybe my Win95a just doesn't cut the 'mustard' with IrfanView'. Everything goes just as you say until I delete the former Bitmap file from my computer. Then when I go to my Display folder thinking the larger Bitmap file has been replaced by the smaller JPEG one I discover it is no longer there at all. I can find the new JPEG file when I use my 'Find Files' option and search for it, but its presence no longer graces my Display folder with my other wallpapers. Apparently my almost to be 62-year-old 'grey matter' just doesn't grasp the technique. I do appreciate all your time and effort and hope you and yours have a safe any Happy New Year too. Regards, Phil

Reply: (edit)Hi all. Phil, don't get discouraged - there's always a learning curve with new software. IrfanView is a sweet program (imo) and works great on my 95A system (3.75 is, I think, the latest version for Win95). I'd encourage you to play around with it some more, study the help file and also try configuring it under the properties menu. It can be helpful to install the plugins as well - although they aren't necessary for basic use. There are better imaging programs, but not for the price ; )

Reply: (edit)Hi beansoup, Wow! You must have the patience of a Saint! Thanks for hanging in there. I just got done following your latest instructions to the 'letter' and still no JPEG file in Display Properties. I am able to change the file from a Bitmap to a JPEG successfully. The problem is and has always been that it will not go into or stay in my Display Properties as a JPEG file Everything goes perfect up until the time I get rid of the Bitmap file. Then, unforunately, when I delete the Bitmap file into 'cyberspace', I can't get the JPEG file to go into my Display properties. When I opened my Display Properties from the Control Panel as you suggested, then clicked on Brouse, I couldn't find any JPG wallpaper to highlight, let alone click to open to move it to my Display list. I appreciate your efforts but someone had told me that with Win95a you could not change a Bitmap to a JPEG and use it as a wallpaper. I guess they are right. I have had a good time trying to solve it, but it is time to move on to other projects. Thanks again for your continued help, Regards and Happy holidaysd to you too, Phil
