Subject: Help: USB Root Hub & ntkern.vxd error
Comment:

I have Win98 with SP1. Everything works fine but the USB. I've tried everything to make it work - from disabling Power Management in BIOS, freeing some IRQ, removing and reloading drivers for USB in SafeMode but still the "USB Root Hub" comes up with a yellow ! mark telling, ntkern.vxd drivers can not be loaded. I'm almost giving up on it. Please, somebody tell me how to fix this? Thanks!

I'm having the same problem as the original post. I have a Win98SE cd-rom, but don't know how to uninstall Win98, and this disk won't work for upgrading. Any suggestions?

Go to support.microsoft.com and get Q299264.
This problem results from incorrect versions of USB drivers in your Windows\System32\Drivers folder.

Basically, to fix, you rename uhcd.sys, usbhub.sys, and usbd.sys to preserve them in case you need them, and then extract these files from the correct Windows disk for YOUR VERSION of Windows. This kind of thing happens when you insert the wrong Windows disk when installing a USB port.

Re Q299264

I neglected to mention that you perform the extraction using system file checker.

To do this, go to Start, Run, and then type SFC. Click "Extract one file from installation disk" type in the first file, uhcd.sys and away you go. Do this again for usbhub.sys, and usbd.sys.
