ok, i have a few problems here....i need to upgrade my laptop to windows 98...i have a full edition cd, and need to use it as an upgrade....i cannot do the rename win.com switch, as i don't have a floppy drive to boot to after i restart, and it seems there is no way to rename win.com and upgrade from the GUI (i tried renaming it, renaming winver, and renaming command.com , in all different combinations)...if i had a floppy drive this would be quite simple, i know....but i don't have a floppy drive on this laptop
so my question is, is there a workaround so i can upgrade from within windows, or is there a way to get the cd-rom drivers into dos, so that when i rename win.com, and restart the laptop, i can access my cd-rom drive from the c prompt?

First, don't mess with command.com [or io.sys or msdos.sys].
As you suspect, there is a workaround.
Boot in DOS [f8] and work on your config & autoexec so that you can access the CD.
If, in the unliekly event you can hammer this out, copy the CD:\win98 to c:\win98, then you can rename win.com [and maybe win.ini] from DOS and run c:\win98\setup
HTH
If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.M2

Better yet, forget tinkering with config.
With 95 running, copy:
xcopy cd:\win98 c:\win98\
Then boot in DOS, do the renaming, and run c:\win98\setup
If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.M2

something simpler. get an external floppy drive. i don't think that major electronic stores sell them anymore but do a little searching here and there and you should probably find one for about im guessing $30 CDN.

If you are going to do any serious work on that machine, let's say you are finally forced to either format the hard drive, or install a replacement----how in heck are you going to initiate a system install if you don't have an alternate boot device?
I'm not familiar with that laptop, but most machines capable of running '98 can boot from the CDROM---have you checked into that?
Also, you evidently have a version of '98 that cannot do an upgrade---the so called OEM "full" edition, which says on the front, "To be supplied only with a new PC" or words to that effect.
If you get just about ANY other version, either RETAIL "full" edition, or an upgrade, you can initiate the install from within windows.
The only other solution I see at this point is to buy yourself one of those handy little laptop hard drive adaptors that allow you to connect the laptop drive to a desktop PC IDE cable.
