Hope you can help. Running win 98 with multilple (2) users and I have a wierd problem. At bootup/logon, we never had to put in a password, we just selected either me or her to get to "our" desktop, email, etc. Now, the system asks for a password. I press return, I get "invalid password" If I press ESC, I go to the generic desktop without my favorites folder in IE, the mail server is all wrong, etc. etc. I never set it up for passwords. The Network settings are for "Windows Logon", there are NO *.pwl files anywhere, not even in system.ini Ideas, anyone? No matter what I try, I can't get it to NOT accept passwords. Even under control panel/passwords/ the "change password" tab isn't there anymore. If I go to my user ID, to change the password, I must have the old password, right? There never was one! I tried to "tab" past it, "enter" past it, no dice. The system is convinced I have a password & I don't. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Go to the Logon tab and type your password.

Make sure you have the latest TweakUi I think it's v1.3. Its the one with 13 tabs on it. Go to the logon tab and here you are able to insert what ever username and password you would otherwise use to logon to windows. Now when you restart your machine it will automatically use this UN and password instead of you having to type it in.

That's just it. Never had a password. Never needed one for either user. She has "her" desktop with her own IE & Outlook express, etc. and I have mine. The system isn't asking for the logon name & password, it's asking for the password to logon to a specific user. It's never done that before. I'm stymied.

Nope. I've tried that stuff. What's in those articles doesn't describe or address my situation. Any ideas why it would suddenly start asking for passwords for the users? Any ideas how to make it stop? I mean, there is no password for either user! Enter, tab, etc. don't work. I'm at a loss.

I had similar problem too.

I have a hewlett packard, so i just typed Hewlett Packard Customer in name and no password and it lets u back in with normal settings.

Do you remember what the generic starting password when u got it (like Hewlett Packard Customer??) If u can, the next times u log on it wont have the pass word boxes in again. Also, in the start menu, it should say log off (***) and the name, maybe that may jog your memory. u may just have accidentally pushed the log off one before and hit some key which put in a silly password like i did.

No, I didn't put in a password by accident. If I did, then mine would have changed & not hers, but since I never set up the password option for user logon in the first place I can't put in the old password to change to a new password. The system is acting like there is an old password, and there isn't one. There are no .pwl files on this machine
& there are no passwords in the system.ini files, either.

It turns out that password cacheing was disabled. I found a thread elsewhere in this post & it told me how to enable it in the registry & voila!! It works now. Thanks for all the help & suggestion, though.
