Subject: Help! Screwed up hard drive and can't boot cpu |
Comment: Ok, my HD is screwed at the moment. Too make a long story short right now (after I reformatted it using the low level format utility under CMOS) I get the following error:"Boot Disk error, Insert system disk and press enter" It used to run on win95 so i tried my boot disk, it didnt work. Tried a win 98 boot disk, didnt work. It came with win 95 installed but i do have the cd rom but it doesn't boot of that either. I've tried all combos of booting from C, A, Cdrom etc and nothing works. I've tried numerous boot/system disks to no help. I've rechecked my BIOS/CMOS settings and (according to manual i got) they are fine. I can't get any prompt (ex a:) so running fdisk isn't an option. Please help, thanks. Its an intel 200 mhz proccessor with 32 mg ram and 2.1 gb .

Reply: (edit)Attention to all who are considering this!!! DON'T low level format unless you've got problems with too many bad sectors. This is the only good reason for a low level format. Having said that, did you obtain a low level format utility from the manufacturer of your HDD for that specific model? No, I think you should! If it's a seagate you can download the utility (which may have come from ontrack) at their site. Lastly, the HHD should run at least 1/2 or more before the LLF, temperature of the disk is an important factor. Try this site for help. Hope you find your way back to where you were! http://www.ontrack.com/

Reply: (edit)If you take the HD out of the system (unplug the data cable) can you boot to A: ? If not it may be more than just the HD problem...

Reply: (edit)If you can't boot to a: I'm thinking you may not even have a hard drive problem (though maybe you have that too), but rather a different hardware problem, ie. bad motherboard? Just a thought.

Reply: (edit)You may have seriou HDD problem now that you have low level formatted it. IDE drives are meant to be low level formatted at the factory only. More than likely the drive has now lost critical information on bad tracks and sectors as well as alignment for the r/w heads. The drive has not been physically damaged, so your best bet would be to return the drive to the manufacturer and have them do a proper low level format. As for not being to able to boot to A: drive, that's probably something simple like boot sequence in CMOS, bad boot disk, or loose signal cable on the FDD.
