Subject: HELP - Reformat hard drive?
|
Comment: I've been experiencing all sorts of problems with my 8 month old pc (especially since upgrading Win95 to Win98). Drivers failing to load, missing dll's, application crashes et al. I bought some software (Mcafee office) which I thought would solve my problems, however it just seemed to make some of them worse! It appears that the Nuts & Bolts application within the office will only identify and fix problems that newly occur after its' own installation and that existing problems and errors will be 'held' as part of the back-up original configuration that is used as a standby. Should I bite the bullet and reformat my hard drive and re-install Windows 98 (and everything else) from scratch. Is this the tedious but definitive fix for all of my problems? Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Reply: (edit)This may just be more for information than a fix.. I was talking to a tach at NEC the other day while fighting my own PC problems, and while he was typing away I asked him if he had heard any new about Win98 (Good, Bad, or other). He said the biggest problem with Win98 is the lack of driver support. Microsoft didn't get good drivers into '98 they say because the mfg's didn't give Mircosoft any products to test their drivers on.. So Microsoft said tough cookies and released win98 with the crappy drivers it currently has. These drivers are causing everyone a lot of problems. So, the best bet is to go out to the website of the mfg's who made your cards and gadgets, and download their drivers. Also, I've heard of people having better luck loading win98 from scratch or upgrading from Win3.1. People haven't had such good luck upgrading from win95..

Reply: (edit)Thanks for your advice folks, I'm seriously thinking of formating my hard drive and simply re-installing Win95. Can anyone tell me the best way to do this? I've already converted my disk to FAT32 (whatever that is) and I fear this might complicate things. Thanks in advance for any replies.

Reply: (edit)If you have converted your drive to FAT32, I am going to assume that you have the original version of W95 because W95B uses FAT32 already. If you have an installation disk for your cdrom, you will have to follow the instructions I just gave to Benjamin Agger regarding Fdisking his harddrive in order to go back to the FAT16 that W95 (original or W95A) supports. The theory for fixing both his problem and yours are the same even though he has W95B. His post title is Win95 can only read 3GB of 5GB HDD. I have two 3.2GB drives and use the FAT16 with the original W95 and have partitioned my drives into 500MB each in order to use up 8KB of disk space for every byte instead of 32KB that happens with W95 so you have options available to you in the sizes you want to use for your drive partitions. That gives me alot of small logical drives, I know, but each one has its own slot of information on it...DATA for one drive, GAMES and GAMES2 for two others, a SWAP file for another, NETTOOLS for another, W95TOOLS for one, ENHANCEMENTS for another, and so on. It makes for a very clean and efficient system and the C: drive only has a small amount of space used up for Program Files that are defaulted there by Windows and Internet Explorer and the Windows Folder itself. I also have one of my drives exclusively for APPS so when I install something like my Word word-processing program I make it install there instead of Program Files like it normally would.

Reply: (edit) Since upgrading to win98 from 95, I have the computer from hell also. Mine keeps reinstalling the modem to comports that don't even exsist. But will not install it to the one where the modem is. It has also done weird stuff, like turning my speakers down. It has made my computer useless. I could also use help reformating my hard drive.

Reply: (edit)I'm having some of the same problems as those mentioned in the responses above and have a computer that re-boots without warning, the mouse locks and won't move, no key will do anything, and when these peculiarities occur, nothing short of turning the computer off will get it started again. I want to re-format to clean the hard drive and donate it to a local school. The preceding response is the only one that gives something of a process but doesn't tell how to make a bootable disk nor if the procedure once this is done is as simple as indicated. Is there a fuller explanation? I re-formatted once before but I've forgotten the process. Surely someone can come up with a viable and understandable method. None of my manuals cover this facet. Thanks for ANY help.

Reply: (edit)I am no expert--but I understand this problem on the emotional and frustration level. I am going over to my friends house to re-format his hard drive after I type out this message. #1- put a floppy boot disk in the A Drive # Two put the windows CD in the CDROM Drive #3 restart the computer #4 when the computer starts the computer will load in the DOS mode--when you reach the prompt point type in format c: and hit enter ( this will wipe your drive) let the computer do it's thing and at the next DOS prompt type setup--after this the windows CD will lead you along with the normal semi user friendly interface that you are used to. Remember this-- after you reformat get back on the web and download the newest and most correct driver for all of your hardware and plug and play devices. Also A hot tip I learned from World Famous Wildlife Painter Roy Chaffin--who is also one of the worlds top designers of aircraft for MSflight simulator {download end it all) This little utility is used to stop programs from operating in the backgroung while you run a graphics intense program such as flite sim. Hope this is of some help-Dorn

Reply: (edit)Make a StartUp disk. It will have everything you need, including the CD drivers. Once it's made and you've tested it, you're done. Go to Control Panel, Select Add/Remove programs. Select the StartUp Disk tab. With a blank diskette in your A drive click OK. Your disk will be created for you.

Reply: (edit)Hi, I am thinking of reformatting my hard drive. As it eems like I have been hi-jacked by MSN when they were only supposed to download and upgrade Internet Explorer to IE5.5. Two days ago I downloaded a security upgrade from the MSN software site as I had been 'nagged' persistantly by a microsoft screen 'popping' up everytime I logged on. I was advised on the same site that to be able to make use of the upgrade I also needed to upgrade to Explorer 5.5 Ever since doing this I have not been able to get my ISP and Internet Explorer wont let me open any web pages. Whenever I click on the Internet Explorer icon a 'content advisor' box pops up and the message says I must check for missing information (dont know what, it doesnt tell me)It does tell me to go via: Tools/Internet Options/Content/Settings and when I look in settings a 'supervisor password' is needed to change the 'disable' button to 'enable' to view web pages. If I try to connect anyway I get 'Page cannot be displayed' as I am 'offline' or 'settings require changing' (I am not offline- I checked) As I have never put a password in the contents advisor I think somehow the microsoft site messed up when they upgraded the program. I have had this computer for two years with no previous problem like this before when using Internet Explorer.I also upgraded last year from IE4 to IE5 with no problems. It all started with this latest upgrade. Does anyone know how I can rectify the situation? Also MSN homepage over rode my ISP homepage and I cant get my ISP's homepage even though it is still set as default (I checked ) thanks for any ifo but in the meantime I am gearing myself up ready to do a reformat of the hard drive.

Reply: (edit) I am also one of these people who has tried to reformat a hard drive( I was using windows 95 ). Here are some of the steps I took or didn't take. I'd appreciate any useful comments. 1) Went into BIOS during the normal Windows 95 "launch" and reformatted hard drive. I do not know if this is similiar to a "format c" command from the DOS prompt or is it the same as"format c/u/s"? 2) Several websights dealing with hard drive formating and reloading of Windows95 say different things about formatting technique. Some say you should use the "format c", others say "format c/u/s". Which is right? 3) I downloaded two bootdisks from sites which claim to have the answer to the cd-rom problem for win95. In both cases I have received a zip file which then required a unzip utility like WINZIP or PKUNZIP ( the last one might be spelled wrong. I don't have the documentation in front of me ). Of course when you have a completely erased C drive where is this utility supposed to come from? Why can't these guys put all the requirements into one file? Maybe I'm just missing something obvious here. But it doesn't seem like it. Too many people giving obviously contrary advice and all of them claiming to be correct. Maybe if more 'netizens' spent as much time learning to communicate in the English language as they do in playing with electronic toys we would all benefit.
