i have an LAN connection but cant get it to connect, i have recently formatted hdd and flashed bios
i have an ethernet address for my ethernet card and for my cable modem i also have a utility to put back the ethernet cards address into the (bios i think) but am not sure whether to put the modem or ethernet card No. in to it
i have tried both No.s but still acant get it to connect, i know that the modem is working ok bcus my firewall is telling me what is going in and out and i can also see how many packets are being sent.
i am getting an error 169.254.xxx.xxx at my IP address when i go into winipcfg i have read on microsoft page that this is an ip address in my pc but i cant seem to find out how i get my isp IP address
i know it sounds confusing but i have called customer support and they cant help me

Download compad.zip (simtel.net is a good site). Unzip and run compad.exe. Type in the isp name (www.blah.net or something like that). Press the button for ip address and there you have it (hopefully!). Good luck.

Unplug your cable modem, for about five minutes and then plug it back in. If you changed the I.P. address on the card, then the modem doesn't know what it is, but will find it when you plug it back in.

It also wouldn't hurt you to contact your cable modem company tech support line and let them walk you through the process of getting things fixed. It's part of the $50.00 or so a month that you pay for the service.
