Comment:

I just installed windows last night, and I began working on other software today. My problem is that when I open a folder to view (any folder, my computer, network neighborhood, etc.) I get the following error that leads to a crash:

EXPLORER caused an invalid page fault in
module OLEAUT32.DLL at 016f:653aac21.

then a dialog box with a title relating to Microsoft Internet Explorer comes up saying a window has crashed and to save all open work then to restart. I have restarted several times, and the problem always reoccurs.

The version of IE that is installed now is IE 6 SP1, the error occured before I updated to IE6 (was the original version if IE). ALso I have "Repaied" IE.

I am also getting errors that lead to crashes in internet explorer (working offline)

another problem is that sometimes after this happens a BSOD appears with a fatal exception, I will post the exact error when it happens again so I can write it down, as it dosen't happen all the time.

I doubt it is a virus, as I have never been on the internet with it. ANd I have installed all the programs on it on other machines with no problems.

I was running XP Pro on it fine but ditched it so I could use video hardware aceleration (there is no XP Open GL driver for the SIS 530 IGP)

Can someone please help me?!?

The error appears to relate to Windows Explorer (the system) rather than Internet Explorer.

Was this a reformat and install, or a Windows install again on top?

Shut down, restart in MS-DOS then type scanreg /fix (hit Return key). This will rebuild your registry and help if it happens to be a registry problem - harmless anyway.

Windows Explorer and Internet Explorer are really intertwined. I would also try an Internet Explorer 'Repair'.
Control Panel > Add Remove Programs, select internet Explorer > Add/Remove > Repair.

Hi Souta, Derek, ham30, hi everyone

With IE 6.0 SP1 your version of oleaut32.dll should be 2.40.4518.0, please verify that you have the correct version.

Version 3.50.5016.0 belongs to WinXP.

Hi all. I have seen this problem many times over. In my own pc, and a few I work on. It seems that IE6 just doesn't take a liking to Windows 98 or Windows 98SE. It works just fine on WinXP or 2000, or ME, but just not 98. Go figure? I ended up formatting. That was after I just drug that damn error box down under the task bar where I couldn't see it for a few weeks. I got so annoyed I just formatted.

I think uninstalling IE 6 did the trick, thank goodness I didn't have to reformat. (And thank goodness for Mozilla Firefox)

Hi Souta, Derek, ham30, Terri, hi everyone

Glad to see that you have sorted things out.

With IE 5.5 SP2 your version of oleaut32.dll should be 2.40.4275.1 or 2.40.4277.1, or although not listed in M$ DLL-help database 2.40.4515, please verify that you have the correct version.

Yeah, not the first time I've known IE6 cause hiccups on W98, so I held up for ages before I tried it. Things did seem to get better around these parts after IE6 SP1 came along. In my case it went just fine. It's possibly a software mix problem, or maybe it was that oleat32.dll being the wrong version.

The main snag with having an older IE versions on the system is security (even if you actually use an alternative browser apparently).

Whether IE6 would now go on is anyone's guess and I'm certainly not trying to suggest you rock the boat again.

It was NOT a software problem, it was overheating, BAD, I almost burnt myself when touching the heatsink, it is suprising that I did not burn up the processor.

Well, seems we all went off at a glorious tangent this time.

Re-reading your original post, knowing your findings, yeah maybe we should have thought of that possibility, although the symptoms were rather broad.

Had a fan stopped, or were the vents blocked, or something else?

Thx for popping back to let us know. I'd be interested in the final fix.

It was a combination of problems that caused it to overheat.
First, the case was poorley designed, it had everything as tightly packed as it could (that's compaq for you)
second the plug for the CPU fan quit working, so I tried the case fan port, but I had to manually start the fan, I cut the monitering wire (so it was just the power wires) and tried it a gain, sucuss, but the cpu fan port was still disfunctional, so I extended the wires and used the case fan port, along with a different case.
