Yesterday I installed Partition Magice 5.01 for the first time as I wanted to divide my single-partition hard disk into 2 partitions. I entered the following changes to be made:

1. resize my c: drive primary partition - make it smaller
2. create an extended partition in the newly freed space
3. create a logical drive (d:) within the extended partition

After I "applied" the changes, the program went into ms-dos mode and did some reworking of my hard disk. After it finished, I could no longer boot from my drive c:. So I booted from floppy and then did a "dir" on my drive c: and.....lo and behold! it gave me a "file not found" error - it did not even have a volume label. Fdisk showed me that the resized c: partition was definitely still there - along with the newly created extended partition. I tried running scandisk on it and it reported an error that either my hard disk was not in LBA mode (it is, I checked in my BIOS) or that one of my partitions is being labelled as non-LBA. I'm not sure what this all means. Anyway, I don't think that my drive c: has been reformatted becasue the free-space reading on it is roughly the same as before PM messed it up.

Please! Please! Can any one help?

Joe

Did you make those 3 rescue disks?
If not you might have to fdisk and start all over :(

The previous post is correct. If you didn't make the tree disks then it is just about impossible to do. What PM does when making a new partition is mark the current one as hidden and the new as active.

Hi,

Thanks for all the suggestions. Preston, I have downloaded the data recovery files but unfortunately can't run them as I am unable to boot my windows. Are there in similar programs which can be run from ms-dos?

yes. try the partitoner at www.users.intercom.com/~ranish/part/
it works from dos, small enough to fit on a floppy, will let you unhide partition and set c as active. have to be patient with interface, like all dos programs.
