Subject: Help!! Outlook Express won't open
Comment:

I upgraded my Internet Explorer to 5.0 today and now when I try to open Outlook Express to get my e-mail, a box pops up that says "unable to start the program. One of the required components may be busy or missing. Please check your installation and try again." Now, how do I check my installation? When answering this, please explain in beginners terms as I'm new to this stuff. Thanks!!

Wow. Loaded question. Need a lot more details I think.

1) what version of MSIE5 did you install? Go to your HELP - ABOUT box in MSIE 5 and read the number out of there.

2) did the "update" you put in contain Outlook Express?

3) Click on my name and see if Outlook Express pops up (same as clicking on any link that is a MAILTO tag.)

4) right click on your Outlook Express icon you use and select properties. Does the path the program look like where it is installed on your hard disk? (It may have updated Outlook Express and moved it to another located leaving your older version inoperative.)

5) re-install Outlook Express from your original disk if you still have it. This would be a last resort as it may well blow away your updates.

6) check micorsoft's knowledge base (just search the microsoft site) to see if they have a fix or patch for Outlook Express. Sometimes applying updates to Outlook Express by itself will correct your problem.

Hi, It said Internet Explorer 5.01, but when I clicked on the about in the help menu it says vers. 5.00.2919.6307
I right clicked the icon and it says "c:\programfiles\OutlookExpress\PGPmsimn.exe"

Still don't answer some of my questions. Did the update come with Outlook Express updates? Does the program "PGPmsimn.exe" exist anywhere else on your hard disk besides the location you describe? (Do a FIND to search your hard disk for this.) Maybe re-installing the MSIE 5.01 patch might help? Other than this, I would suggest going to MS's site and grab a few patches for Outlook Express to try and fix this.

Sorry I can't help much further.

I checked and it didn't mention Outlook Express in the info about the upgrade. I'll do a search for the PGP thing and maybe try to uninstall the 5.01 and go back to the other version. Thanks anyway for your help.

I had the sae problem. The only way I solved it was to uninstall OE, then re-download it and install it.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. This morning I uninstalled IE 5.01 and it put all my previous stuff back. So now I have my Outlook back. All I know, is I'm not upgrading anything ever again. lol Nothing ever runs smoothly for me with this computer stuff. Thanks again though.
