You need drivers (software) for sound/modem/display etc. Usually a CD is provided with the machine or motherboard. If not you need to Google for drivers.

I don't know your particular machine but it rather sounds as if you need chipset drivers (which cover everything) unless you are using an add-on display card.

If it's an add-on card then you need to get the drivers for that (from whoever made it).

Whatever, make sure you get the right ones.

The monitor itself is not usually fussy about drivers, it's the display hardware (inside the box) that needs them.

... more. If you used a "Restore CD" they might be on that but usually it would load them automatically.

Apparently you have the TNT2 in your system. There should definitely be a driver disc that came with the PC, if the restore disc did not include the applicable TNT2 driver.

You can however install the forceware driver and it should take care of it as well. Make sure you download from your region (US or International).

I may have linked to the another driver page. The url below has the individual TNT2 driver from nVidia.

Your only choices are between the two 9x ones, AGP or PCI.

I think I know which one but best let Sabertooth advise because it seems he knows the machine and it will save me a trip to Google.....

Hey b-rad,

If you aren't familiar with the hardware upgrade wizard, then I'll suggest you simply forgo the individual driver route and just install the forceware drivers from my first link - no need to get things more complicated for you ;-)

From what I have read on the nvidia site you
need the below driver71.84.

This is where Sabertooth was leading you I believe.

In the left column of page you can click on
products supported and read before you do the download.

Hmmm, Acer does list an ATI AGP2X 8MB as a display option for the Aspire 6400, may be that's what you have.

At this point, I suggest you download Unknown Devices and let's see which one it is that you've got.

Glad you got it sorted out, although it's a little strange 71.84 (March 11, 2005) worked and 81.98 (December 21, 2005) didn't ;-(

olcow

No two problems are alike. I suggest you raise your own new post rather than adding to an old one, which only a few will now visit. That way we will also collect the required information about your system.

Go to the top left of this page and choose the Windows system you are using. Keep note of the post number it gives you.

On the new post explain exactly what the problems are and which particular card you are talking about.
