I haven't turned on one of my computers for awhlie. Now when I try to turn it on a password is needed to continue. I have no idea what password I used. Is there any to bypass this option. There's no userid in the box. I have windows 98.

need to know if this is this a cmos - bios password prompt or a windows login prompt, typically a cmos password has a black background.
Do you ever see the windows 98 startup screen? Then a password promt with a blue background?

You can't just hit "escape" or "cancel" out the login?

Do Find/Files & Folders searching *.pwl
You should find one or two files.
Temporarilly delete them to the recycle bin.
Reboot and see if this clears it.

Here's a little more detail of what's happening: Turn computer on it boots a little then says press F1 to setup I let it boot completely then it takes me to the press 1 for normal 3 for safe mode screen. It doesn't matter what number I choose it gives me an error message HIMEM testing then shuts off. Now if I was to press the F1 to setup it shows me a peek of windows 98 the prompted to put a password. This is in a box that says BIOS SETUP UTLITY. I hope this helps someone help me.

Aha, seems like it's a BIOS password, so my #4 will be of no use to you (that's for Windows password).
Can you supply some info about your machine (make/model and if possible BIOS make or motherboard).
Taking the battery out for a while can sometimes clear this, although yours seems a little more complex as it is taking you to Start Menu first.

When you let it boot normally and it goes to the option screen, is #5 'comand prompt only'? If so, choose that. If you get to a c:\> prompt type:
ren c:\config.sys config.old
and enter. Then type:
ren c:\autoexec.bat autoexec.old
and enter. Then attempt to boot normally.
If after choosing 'command prompt only' you get an error message and it stops, exactly what is the error message?
