Help! I recently went DSL and around the same time,
my computers software crashed. I had to do the dreaded
recovery. At the same time, I upped my Ram from 96 to
256. Hoping to improve my performance, or restore it
back to running somewhat smoothly! Evidently something
(software?) is embedded, because going online with
Netcape or Explorer completely depletes my systems
resources. I'm fairly 'old' and not too knowledgable
about computers, or I'd have a fix! I've done the
MSCONFIG many times, but I'm not sure what's critical
or not, from my start-up. My resources start at 60% and
drop to the teens, when I'm online. Uploading pictures
has become a chore! Could it be a virus? Many thanks,
for any help on getting a handle on this! SP.

First of all the DSL has very little to do with this.

You need to look at your resources.

Go to System Information - start/programs/accessories/system tools/system information

Now in the left panel you can check for conflicts, or whatever.

You should have at least 25% of you hard drive empty. After you have filled over 75% of your hard drive things slow down very very fast.

You could also repost here and tell us what your computer is made up of. Hard Drive Size - Ram Amount - Operating System - Amount of Free Space on Hard Drive (HDD)

Try running the Defrag utility to speed up things. Start/Programs/Accessories/system tools/Defragmenter

Nothing in the Msconfig/Startup tab is critical. You can disable `any' or `all' of them for a test.

W@W, thanks for all the great info!
My system is rapidly aging. In regards
to my hard drive, it's a 20GB. I'm
going to try some of your suggestions
right now. Sorry, about the delay. I
just got in from work! -Sean Phillips

You have been given some handy tips Sean but if none of those tips seem to work, I would suggest that you contact www.computerissues.com for support. A friend of mine had a very similar problem to yours and they helped him correct the problem in a very short period of time. His resources were also very low and the computer was just crawling with speed.

Thanks and good luck

Hi, to one and all! I truly appreciate
everyone's help. I've exhausted all the
options I've read on the above sites or
links. My resources are at about 60%,
when I add CompuServe, Explorer, and
Netscape it drops to 15%. I have tons
of RAM, and my harddrive is 80% free.
About 16MB of 20MB's are free. I've
deleted tons of software, and almost
all start up items too. I guess I
should have not given away my new
computer to a young guy at work. I
guess I'll buy another one, and use
this puppy for a back-up computer!
I might try one or two more options,
but I'm not fairing too well! Thanks,
a million for all your kindness! -Sean
