I have had similar occurances with win95 (ain't it great). Each time it was due to an installation I had done. If you have recently installed ANYTHING, delete it. Also, try holding down the shift key while your computer boots. This will start your cpu in "safe mode". From here you can do a number of things to find out what's causing the complication. Try right clicking on my computer, selecting properties, and then choose device manager. See if there are any conflicts present(they will have a exclamation point inside a yellow circle). You should be able to remove any conflicts and your cpu should auto detect any deleted components upon restart.

I am having the same problem. It seems to be related to registry entries which originally load the hidden copy of explorer in the task list at startup. Some installations and registry utilities seem to screw this up, and re-entering a startup run entry for explorer seems to help, I don't know what the correct entry or series of entries should be. You can tell if you have this problem if there is not a hidden, unassigned copy of explorer in the task list that appears when you hit Ctrl-Alt-Del. Sometimes the crash only causes the tray icons to disappear and sometimes the task bar is lost. Running explorer from the run command of the task manager will sometimes restore the system. My efforts to compare the explorer related registry entries from a healthy machine have only frustrated me and contributed to my contempt for bill.

Here's the scoop on some explorer.exe crashes when both McAffee and Norton have been installed. Somehow the registry has erroneous entrys due to the combination of these programs doing something funny to the registry. Remove both programs if you can and use a registry repair program to salvage the registry. You can salvage it, you dont have to reinstall, I've done it.
