Subject: help me to upgrade my win98->winXP
OS: Windows 98 SE
CPU/Ram: PIII 665MHz /256 Mb Ram
Comment:

hi!
I need some help, because I'm starting to upgrade my opsys and therefore need guidance for what should I do for the upgrade to succeed ...
My hdd has two partitions. The one where the winXP is supposed to be installed is C: (d: drive is meant to be untouched) ... filesystems are both FAT (not NTFS). I will make a format also for my drive c: and I want to know if I can use the winXP boot disks (6) or should I format my c: drive with the win98 boot disk ... and some guidance for the format is needed too ...

I may sound as a complete n00bie, but all the best!

Howdy:
Simple way to do all this is with Partition Commander or Partition Magic (the first one is cheaper and works just as well).

Couple of questions...

Are you going to replace 98 with XP, or are you planning a dual boot?

FAT format will automatically limit your partition size to 2Gig. FAT32 does not have this limitation.

What is the size of you HDD?

BTW.. 256mb of RAM is just about minimum for XP.

I'm going to format my C: drive (that is actually with FAT32 filesystem) and after the format will install winXP ... my HDD size is 15Gigs (C:/ 10Gig and D:/ 5Gig) ...

btw ... my friend runs the xp on a 128Mb Ram ... and still going ;)

First of all, if your windows XP cd is the full version or OEM, then you should not need to boot from a boot disk. Either 98 or XP bootdisk, because you can boot off the XP disk (CD). Go into your bios and change the order in which your computer boots up to CDRom, Ide (Harddrive), followed by Floppy. When the computer reboots just insert your copy of XP and the computer will boot from the CD. If your copy of XP is not a full version CD, then just startup windows and allow the computer to boot all the ways to your desktop. Once there insert your Windows XP CD and it will ask you if you want to upgrade. Once you select 'yes' it will ask if you want to upgrade your current windows (Therefore saving everything on your C: drive), if you want a clean install (highly recommended) tell it 'yes', but with a clean installation. This will reformat the C: drive, then it will ask what type of partition you want. Since your D: drive is Fat32 it doesn't matter what you choose. NTFS will read Fat or Fat32 drives. As far as memory is concernned, 128mb ram is okay, but with XP more is better.

Are there any differences with the XP 5in1 version? Or should it work just as Shieldwall told?
