Subject: Help me PLEASE with an Dell Latitude password
Comment:

I have an Dell latitude Cpi PII 266, someone thought to be funny and did put a password in my computer. They even did disable my floppy disk boot option in my setup.

When I start my computer it immediatly asks for a password, so it is impossible to boot from a disk. I also did disconnect my CMos battery with no results.

A did also read about a master password, is there someone in this World who knows it, or who knows how I can solve my problem.

Please can someone any one HELP ME???????

With all my thanks!!!!!

Check out the documentation. Removing the cmos battery usually clears the cmos memory. You may have to set a specific jumper setting inside of the actual computer to reset the master password. Then you have to put the jumper back. I would try to find a manual, or go to www.dell.com and check with their tech support. As an aside, why not just track down who put the password on their for you. Sound like you have some great friends :)

You might have to leave the battery out overnight to drain the capacitors fully.

You can not jump any jumpers in a laptop, you have to call dell support and get the master password, and you have to give them the service tag number. And you have to be the register owner of the system! Each note book has it's own special number. You can try-" bios* "as a password,if this don't work you have you make the call.

So, So, Sorry, You can't do anything. You must call dell for the master password (each computer does have one). Remember, you must be the register user.

see you.

Hi People,

This may sound really stupid, but I removed my password by putting the system board in the freezer for one day.
Caution: Make sure it is DRY. Put in a antistatic bag.

Regards,
Joost

By the way,
If you all are asking about the Hard-Drive password, like in the DELL Latitude LS, all you need to do is buy a replacment drive! There is a chip on the main board that copies the firmware number from the hard drive and assigns a password (if it set for that drive) to that specific drive. This is also true for IBM Thinkpads. I have only tested this using IBM TravelStar HDs, so I don't know what would happen with other brands of HDs.
Here's how I tested: I took the HD from the DELL and put it into a IBM 600 thinkpad. Right away, I got a prompt for a HD PW (where there was none set on the IBM at all!!!). I was not able to put the HD from the IBM into the DELL, b/c the drive was a little too big for the slot. Logically, there should be no password on the IBM drive in the DELL laptop.
Cheers,
Yo Mama

Passwords are stored in an eeprom (24c02).
To remove the password,
- clear the cmos
- flash your BIOS: get the file on internet and use an eeprom programmer
- store 00 00 ... on the eeprom 24c02

Re the Response from Denis, can anyone advise 1)how I clear the cmos,
2)I have the latest Bios downloaded from Dell.
3)Where do I get an eeprom programmer
4)How do I use it to store 00 00 on the eeprom 24c02

Just a thought, why do you need to clear the cmos, why not just store 00 00 at 24c02

TTry this only if you have exhausted all other means and are about to fling your laptop from a high altitude.
remove the cover from the back side (where the ram is there should be a small square chip
this is the cmos. turn the laptop on, when the password screen comes up, remove the cmos. this will cause your computer to shut down. plug it back voila! the computer registers an error during boot up, and instructs you to press f2 to setup.(may take a few tries(mine took 3). NEVER GIVE UP..

The chip that needs flashing is an AMD AM29F002T-120JC. This needs an EEPROM programmer - maybe someone who understands these things can have a look at this chip and tell us how to get the password off??
What if we reset the chip - pin1 is reset, if we connect this to a voltage what will that do???

Flashing the cmos"AM29f002t" does not remove the password ! I have a eprom burner. I also put the cmos chip in another laptop of the same model and flashed it to the latest bios version, it didn't come up with a password in the second laptop, i also tried the chip from the other laptop, no good either.
So i am led to believe the password is stored
on the"24c02" prom?? it is situated under the cpu,and is soldered to the mainboard, so how the "F" do i flash it from there? too be continued.

WE FIXED OURS !!

www.Agent-Mulder.com website provides a file called latitude.exe

just run this on any working PC in DOS like so:

c:>latitude.exe 1A3B5 where 1A3B5 is the 5 characters you will find next to the battery release lock underneath your Dell.

This will give you the case sensitive number to enter when promoted. Our was 8 digits.

Good Luck!
