Reply: (edit)Hi Matt, I created a startup disk on a Windows 95 machine and I put that in the A: drive, but I still can't get to the CDROM. The screen says "Starting Windows 95..." then I get the A:\ I type d: e: and I get nothing. What next? Thanks, Drew

Reply: (edit)thats cos the bootdisk isnt loading the cd rom drivers. if you can, grab a copy of win98 second edition, that will boot from the cd itself does win98 as well? i dont think so, but make sure that the cd and a: load before the hard disk (bios settings) if that doesnt work, check your c:\autoexec.bat and config.sys files. if youre lucky they will have cd drivers. you can recognise this by looking for mscdex.exe in autoexec.bat and a .sys file which usually has 'cd' somewhere before the dot. if you see those lines then just copy them across to the boot disk and youll be sweet. if not, you might need to do a search on your hard disk, or the cd rom/disk that your computer came with

Reply: (edit)You say you used a 'startup' disk. But a true startup diskette, when you boot, will ask if you want CDROM support. Answer 'yes' then you can insert your Win CDROM and run 'setup'. Download a boot floppy from: Boot Disk Don

Reply: (edit)Hi Matt, I'm trying to load W 98, but all I have is a startup disk from W 95, emphasis on the 5. Do I need a 98 boot disk? I've got the original W 95 disks, but my W 98 is a full instal and it aborts when I try to install over Windows 95.

Reply: (edit)Original version of win95 does NOT make a startup disk with CDROM support. Refferences to mscdex etc in autoexec.bat and config.sys only tell the system where to look for what files, if the files are not there , NO GO , and of course a freshly formatted disk has no CDROM support files on it. Make a boot disk from bootdisk.com or win 98 to get CD support. READ the help file from the boot disk so you know what letter will be assiogned to the CDROM drive.

Reply: (edit)Drew, to upgrade with a full version CD, you'll have to rename win.com to something like win_old.com. Then run setup. Use a Win98 bootdisk as suggested above, but note that a Win98 disk creates a RAMDrive as D: so your CD-ROM will be bumped one drive letter to E: (assuming that it is normally D:). Hope this helps. Dave
