Subject: HELP Installing Windows 98 SE!
Comment:

I want to format Windows XP and install Windows 98 SE. Can I use the Windows XP CD to format my drive and avoid installing Windows XP over again? How can XP boot into DOS mode? Also, I have a NTFS File System, do I have to change it to FAT32 to use Windows 98 SE? Also, if I format EVERYTHING in my C:\, and reboot, will it boot into DOS mode?

Place your Win98SE boot floppy in your floppy drive and you Win98SE CD in your CDROM. Reboot your computer and it will take you right to the A: prompt. Now type format c:

If you want to format the hard drive and REMOVE EVERYTHING, the easiest way is with a win98 boot disk from http://www.bootdisk.com

Put the disk in and start the computer. Since your setup as NTFS, you will need to change that to fat32 so win98 can use it. To do that, at the prompt A:\> type fdisk and press enter. At the fdisk menu, select #3 to delete the primary partition. Then select #1 to create a new one. You will need to reboot and at the prompt A:\> type format c:

formatting the C drive allows you to install an operating system like win98.

In case response #1 doesn't work.
I don't think response #2 will work if your drive is NTFS
In that case download Delpart and use it to remove the NTFS partition. Then use fdisk to repartition as Fat32. Then you can use response #2.

Thanks for the quick response. At the Bootdisk.com website, there is a win98 bootdisk and a win98se bootdisk. Which one do I download? Also, dude, sorry, but they don't call me Phil.

Dear Friend --
You can delete the NTFS partition using the win98 Fdisk. Be sure you select " Delete non-Dos partitions" from the Fdisk menu.

After deleting the NTFS partition you can create your new Win98 FAT partition and make it Primary ...Then proceed to to the FAT32 Format after rebooting.

Good luck ...
