Comment: Help I need help finding my certificate of authenticity for win95 from the computers registry, but it has to be done through dos, cuz i cant get into windows. I have a disk, but the number that came with it wont work on my computer. Ive tried lots of numbers, but its looking for the one already in there. If you could please give me exact directions for how to do this, i would be forever grateful. Thanks

Reply: (edit)Boot to Dos from a floppy with edit.com on it. Edit.com can be found in c:\windows\command.
Run edit.com and open c:\windows\system.pca
It will look like a bunch of garbage but that's ok. Do a search for productkey (all one word). The key will be found immediately after 'productkey'.

Reply: (edit)Boot to DOS and edit the SYSTEM.1ST file. This is a hidden file but it will open. Then search for "-oem-", the reg numbers will be wraped around this. Not all computers show the reg number here. If not go to windows and edit the SYSTEM.DAT file.
