CPU/Ram: Celeron 850 MHz, 128 MB S
Comment:

Hi, i upgraded to Celeron 2.4 GHz, 512 MB dual DDRAM, GA sq800 motherboard and NvIdia geForce 5 FX 5200 videocard. I re-installed Windows98se and now i have nasty problems with it. It constantly shows error messages about not being able to run some of the programs. It shows blue screens. it shows BLACK screens (the screen becomes black just like switched off or sth, then after awhile the normal desktop appears again). For example I see black screens when scrolling down in Opera browser and when switching between channel windows in mIRC... The PC is also very unstable - it hangs, it stops it drags... It also restarts without any reason... OK, i know what you'd say. NO, it is not a virus, i am sure. I haven't downloaded any fles from the net since i upgraded the machine. I also did a virus scan using the latest F-Prot DOS version - no viruses found.
Please advice me what to do to solve this problem. May it be caused by overheated CPU? (My CPU temperature is about 30 up to 35 degrees Celsius) I also remember that I read some article about my motherboar (GA sq800) having a known issue with NvIdia FX 5200 but i am not sure about that - it might have been about another MB or videocard. Could it be the problem?
Thanx, guys.

Vladimir,

"It constantly shows error messages about not being able to run some of the programs."

What do the messages say? Are they related to memory?

Windows 98 has a problem with 512MB memory. Try going to Start, Run, msconfig, General tab, near the bottom, click on the Advanced button.
Place a check next to "Limit memory to" and set it to 384. Click Apply and Ok. Follow the prompts.

If this resolves your problem then either leave it like that or post back for the work around or search the board for the answer.

Wasn't there an upper speed limit for the CPU under '98? Something like 2.1 GHz?

Seems to ring a bell - could be way off here though.
