Windows 98 has detected that drive C does not contain a valid FAT or FAT32 partition. There are several possible causes.
1. the drive may need to be partitioned. to create a partition on the drive, run FDISK from the MS-DOS command prompt.
2. you may be using a thired party disk partitioning sofware. if you are using this type of software, remove the Emergency boot disk and restart your computer. Then, follow the on-screen instructions to start your computer from a floopy disk.
3. some viruses also cause your drive C to not register. You can use a virus scanning program to check your computer for viruses.

the diagonostic tools were successfuly loaded to drive C.

A:\>

When I do step 1.

1. I typed in A:\>fdisk
No fixed disk present.

A:\>
When I do step 2.
2. Operating System not found.

Step 3 (virus) I don’t know much about.

I’m trying to reinstall Win98 on this machine. Need help, please give me step by step Direction. I have created a Boot Disk from www.Bootdisk.com.

What should I do next?

What Type of drive is it (Manufacturer and Model #)? There might be a disk utility that will check that hard drive to see if it is bad or not.

Check in cmos to make sure the HD is properly configured--usually as AUTO. You might also check that the IDE controllers are enabled.

If you opened the case you may want to look inside again and make sure the cables are connected properly.

Was the HD working OK before?

RAVIFROMAC,

When you get "No Fixed Disk Present" message on FDISK, the next step is to enter your BIOS Setup (CMOS Setup) to verify whether BIOS has detected the Hard Disk Drive.

In the Startup Screen that comes up when the Computer is Powered On, often a series of messages are displayed in a fast pace. Things may include the name and version number of your BIOS and what key or combinartion of keys have to 'hit to enter the BIOS (CMOS) Setup screen. Usually they are Del, F1, F2 or , F10.

Please tap the appropriate key as soon as the computer restarts and access the BIOS setup screen

You can find out about your Hard Disk Drives either from the Main menu or Advanced Setup.

The screen will show either at its bottom or Right side, a legend about the key (s) you have to press to Navigate and access various items shown. Use them and find out the if your HDD is detected by the BIOS and also its make and Model.[Example a Wester Digital HDD may show up as: Model ID WDC WD800BB-00CAA1.]
Write down the information and post for further help. To get out of BIOS setup and Restart, press ESC key and follow the directions. Since you may not be changing anything the usual key of F-10 to Save changes and Exit, followed by ENTER for YES will suffice.
If BIOS does not show a HDD, then more than likely your HDD is dead. :-(. You may try for some diagnostic software from HDD Manufacturer but usually the 'game is over' :-(
