I had this problem too.
I think it is a problem with the wsock32.dll file. I cured it by booting to a DOS prompt and deleting C:\windows\system\wsock32.dll, then replacing it with another copy. When it boots back up, I got a few errors about protocols not being installed properly but after I removed and reinstalled them, the OS seemed to work fine.

hope this helps...

Thanks for the suggestions. I found another article and was able to get rid of this problem by repairing Internet Explorer 5. A repair option is available when you select Internet Explorer 5 and press 'Add/Remove' button in the 'Add/Remove Programs' on the Control Panel.

I have Win98 SE on my laptop and IE5 is not listed in Add/Remove (I presume it is preinstalled), when I want to repair IE. Any other suggestions?

I experienced the same error as Barry back in 6/99. I have Win98 SE w/updates and IE 5.01 w/patches.
I replaced my w32sock.dll and still get the error when I dialup.
I'll try the IE 5 Add/Remove solution.

This put me on right track had same error.
Found on my system that I had windows\winsock.dll and windows\system\winsock.dll.
windows/ dated jan 2000 windows/system dated
1995 . jan 2000 was when I upgraded from win95 to win98 2e. renamed old verson to .sav
and moved the newer version to windows/system.
Rebooted and the problem seems to be solved.

I get the Illegal Operation:
Explorer has caused an invalid page fault in modeule sens.dll
this occured after booting windows. From the DOS I had renamed wsock32.dll so I could extract a fresh copy. Upon booting windows to perform the extration I received this error.
Now, however the Active Desktop is deactivated, and the entire background is white. If I chose to recover the AD the error simply loops. If I cold boot or even just restart the prolbem persists.
Any ideas?

look for a file called wsock32.ska on your computer. if it is there you have the ska virus. rename wsock32.ska to wsock32.dll and overwrite the existing file to fix. this will fix the crashing sens.dll

I have the same problem, if I dial up after I had upgradet from IE 5.0 to IE 5.01.
After making a backtrack from this operation with cyberhelp uninstaller the problem is gone but after restart the error persists.
I think its a problem of upgrading sens.dll from IE5.0 win98 to sens.dll from IE5.01=Win2000 dll.
