Problem description
My new motherboard, after an apparently successful boot up ALWAYS gives an exception 0E (the "Blue Screen Of Death") after some random interval (2 - 60 minutes). Occurs spontaneously even when there is no user activity on the machine but seems to occur sooner when there is user activity. Generally it is possible to at least return to the desktop after the fault but other system hangs & application errors are then likely to occur. After the fault the system will ALWAYS hang during any attempted win95 shutdown or restart.
The exact BSOD message is "exception 0E at 0028:C0003AE7 in VxD VMM(01) + 00002AE7. Called from 0028:00013046 in VxD ---. It may be possible to continue normally" ( + the usual offer of Press Any Key or hit CTRL-ALT-DEL)
Apart from the random timing, the problem is completely reproducible. I've been collecting DrWatson fault logs. Many parts of the log are the same between fault instances but some details vary.
The fault MAY be temperature sensitive. It seems to occur sooner on hot days (e.g. ambient 30 - 40 deg C vs 15 - 25 deg C)
System Hardware. Nothing fancy
Proc. : new AMD K6-2 300
m/b : new Gigabyte GA-5SG100 (SiS 5591 AGP chip set)
100Mhz clock, x 3 clock multiplier (all as spec. in m/b manual)
bios : Award 4.51PG GA-586SG REV.1.15 All options set up as per manual.
memory : new 32 Mbyte SDRAM
video : S3 virge 3D, 4 mbyte. Running on PCI bus, not AGP
Not new but completely reliable in a previous system
kb/mouse : standard, previously used, no known faults
Software - O/SOriginal Windows 95 &/or Win 95B (4.00.950 B) both installed from clean
(several times !). Minimal other s/w. In particular IE4 NOT installed.Investigation so far.
Many internet hours, searching DejaNews & MS knowledge base. Have done bios disable of L1 & L2 cache. Fault remains. Have not physically removed L2 cache chips
Speculations
m/b faulty ?
K6 faulty ?
SDRAM faulty, or not rated for 100 Mhz ?
L2 (external) cache RAM faulty ?
video card incompatible ?I've spent several days working on this and any help would be MUCH appreciated. I'd love to have :
(1) a complete fix
(2) info from anyone who's had similar problems.
(3) any suggested diagnosis & lines of approach for a fix
(4) pointers to hardware testing programs (particularly memory & cache testing)
(5) pointers to any net resources concerning DrWatson
& the analysis of fault logsRegards to all,
in desperation

John,
this may have absolutely nothing to do with your problem, but I had a similar problem with a Gigabyte mother board. It turned out to be the CD-ROM driver.
I had to remove all mention of the CD setup in the config.sys. This resolved the problem and Windows used its own CD-ROM driver. However, I can't use the CD in DOS.
Good luck,
Glen

I have the same exact problem with the same MB (GigaByte) but it remained after i moved to another MB. Ill add that the error gets MUCH less frequent when i remove the cover and statr my A/C. But also, i did suspect the CD driver and disconnecting it altogether gave me one good day of no errors.
I guess Both are a problem, the CD AND hte temperature. Ill give you and idea of hte hell i went thru (and still am going thru).
System is a PII 400, 128M.
I started with a Gigabyte MB 440BX andmoved to anohter brand 443BX
I started with 4x32mb Ram and moved to 1x128
I started with an S3 Trio AGP andmoved to an intel 740 AGP
I Also changed Disk, processor fan and power supply.
Only two things remain, Processor and Floppy... SAME ERROR.

Problem resolved by adding a fan facing the Processor. 2 weeks now and no errors. The challange will be to find a spot to place the fan and a power outlet for it.
