Please help! I have been having trouble with installing my new dsl line on my Win2000 machine and now went for my laptop, which has win98 on it. Problem is: The provider`s software will only work from 98SE upwards. Is there any possibility to get it running without the software, via manually installing a line? The DSL modem is hooked up to the network card, and every time I try to install a connection to the internet via DUN, the machine is looking for a modem which it cannot find... I just don`t know what to do?

You should be able to put in the parameters manually. Your problem is you are trying to set up a DUN connection. DUN stands for Dial Up Networking. DSL is not dial up. Contact your ISP and they can walk you through adding an IP address and any other configurations.

Your system sets up the LAN card with drivers etc. The LAN card however needs the protocol on which to run. The ISP/DSL software is used to load/establish this. Mine for example is P.P.P.oE., tied into the installed LAN card. If the ISP software isn't doing the job, their support people should be able to walk you through getting everything established. I had to use my ISP software (Access Manager) on 98SE and Win 2000 Pro, but not on XP-Home.

It's a good day when you learn something

I use SBC/Yahoo DSL, which claimed that I needed at least 266-MHz PC's running Win98SE or better.

The truth is that those spec's are only required for running the SBC browser, which is a bloated piece of crapware. I frequently hookup (wirelessly, I might add) 120-MHz laptops running Win95.

Follow the advice above. It'll work.

Dave357,

I couldn't agree with you more. I went to install SBC DSL CD and it said it didn't support Windows 95. But the CD is only for browser, etc. You don't need it for internet, those are probably just requirements to run the software. I have AOL so it is pointless anyway.

I stuck the line in my computer, installed the drivers for the network card, and I was ready to go.

PS Toshiba 470CDT Pentium MMX 200MHz Windows 95 4.00.950 C.
