I have an IBM Thinkpad I series 1300 that is about a year old running Windows 2000. I have this laptop connected to a small home network using a Linksys 10BaseT 5 port hub.
This afternoon I was using my laptop and then set it aside to go and turn on the other computer connected to my hub. The other computer is a AMD 266mHz with 64 MB of RAM and Windows 98.
AS soon as I hit the power button on the second computer, my laptop went dead. I can't do anything with it now. It wont even POST. The only light that is on is the battery light and it will change from orange to green when I plug in the power. If take the battery out the light goes off, but it doesn't come on if the battery is out and the power is pluged in.
Please let me know any sugestions. I really hope that I haven't fried the laptop. The warrenty just ran out about 2 months ago.

thanks in advance
Swandive

It sounds like the battery went south. A solid green light means the battery is good. Any other color is bad news.

Check out Ebay for replacements (about $50-$100).

Thanks for your input. I dont think thats the problem though. The battery light always changes to orange when the battery is charging. Also I cant even boot when the battery is removed and the power connected.

Thanks anyway

Swandive,

I am not familiar with your type of notebook (being a Dell girl myself) but I would try these things...

1. smell your laptop (I know it sounds silly, but if you really fried it, chances are it smells like it... even though the smell may be faint) If you do smell something akin to burned tires... than yes, it's fried. (also, try removing the hard drive and RAM and smelling in those areas)

2. Try resetting power to the motherboard. If it was a Dell system, I would say remove the RAM and battery, plug in the AC power cord and hold down the power button for 5 to 15 seconds, or until all the power lights flash and go out. (sometimes your MB gets confused... how's that for technical!... and it needs you to reset it to be able to post again)

3. If you did fry something... it might have been the RAM... try putting the RAM stick (if you only have one) into the secondary slot and see if it boots.

4. Call IBM, you said it was a year old, and hopefully you paid for the 3yr warranty... it's definitely the smart way to go if you're not a techie.

Hope this helps.
gg
