Comment:

I download attachments off of e-mails from friends all the time that are uploaded as .TXT files. Is there anyway to convert those into their original form (i.e. .exe or .AVI files)

Are you sure they arn't text files? Try saving the file then renaming it with it's original extension.

That's right - try renaming them. Right-click on the file and rename to *.exe or *.avi if you know what kind of files they were originally.
We do this at work because we are not allowed to receive or send *.exe so we send *.txt (which we are allowed) and then rename them back when we save them!

Actually, If they are text files, but you are sure they are Avi's, exe's, etc.

Then you probably need to have a mime decoder installed to see their true format.

MIME:

Short for Multipurpose Internet Mail Extensions, a specification for formatting non-ASCII messages so that they can be sent over the Internet. Many e-mail clients now support MIME, which enables them to send and receive graphics, audio, and video files via the Internet mail system. In addition, MIME supports messages in character sets other than ASCII.

There are many predefined MIME types, such as GIF graphics files and PostScript files. It is also possible to define your own MIME types.

In addition to e-mail applications, Web browsers also support various MIME types. This enables the browser to display or output files that are not in HTML format.
