help! botched downgrade to 98'

Specs: Windows 98
help!! ..let me preface by warning i am a newbie with a capital "N"!! this is my first post to a computer i apologize for my complete lack of please explain S-L-OW-L-Y!.
(my puter' is an old compaq presario 1200 notebook)
my wife was changing between operating 98....and i have no idea
in what state it was in but it crashed...and now i just get the "ntldr is ctrl+ alt+ del"
message....done this many times...nothing...!
and i have toyed around with the page that comes up while holding down f10....nada....!

here is my goal:: (if even possible)!

WIPE all data....and install xp from my xp disc..!!

thanks in advance....sorry i"m so puter' illiterate!

Hopefully you've not registered that copy yet. You may run into licensing issues w/M$ if you have...

As long as you have the XP disk you can delete the existing partition which for all practical purposes will erase everything. Just boot up with the XP disk and choose to install XP. It'll show the partitions you have and give an option to remove it. Do that, then recreate the partition and install XP.

I don't think a Presario 1200 will run XP well, if at all.
