I just got a "new" Pentium 1 machine running Win 95. I've encountered some annoying problems which I'd like to get rid of.
First, almost every time I exit a program, I get an error message saying the program I just shut off has done an illegal action. Second, I get runtime/flow errors a lot. Third, I can't use Scandisk or defragment my disk, because the computer jams almost totally. The computer has quite lot of RAM, 80Mb, so I bet it can't be that. Please help!

Try running scandisk from Safe Mode - or even from the DOS prompt. Defrag (why do people cling to this?) is not likely to solve any of the problems you're experiencing - worry about that later - although the WinME version of defrag is superior to the one that ships with 9x..
You may find it advantageous to install & run a few programs:
Msconfig from '98 will allow you to control your Windows startups more readily.
Scan for adware/foistware etc with Ad-aware & Spybot.
AntiVirus??

Hi Lightforce, hi everybody
A scanreg /fix shouldn't do harm and may fix the first two problems, to perform the scanreg /fix boot into DOS. At the DOS-prompt type in: scanreg /fix[Enter]key
Are you by any chance low on free disk space?
If not, try both Scandisk and Defrag from within Safe-Mode.Let us know how things turn out.

Sorry - forgot that (for some reason) the Ad-aware installer does not run under 95.
To use Ad-aware (recommended) on a 95 machine, you would need to install it on a 98 or so computer and then transfer the folders to the 95 machine.
PitA? Yes, yes it is, but why ask why?

Hey, Count : )
Alas... it's 95 - no scanreg available

Hi Lightforce, jboy, hi everybody
jboy, silly me. :%)
Windows 95 is to long ago for me to remember all the exact details on what's possible/supported and what isn't. Funny thing is that the good old MS-DOS commands are still well preserved in memory. :-)
Thanks for posting a link to the WinMe-defrag download on our site.Lightforce, as a alternative for scanreg /fix maybe this could be of help to you: WinRescue 95.

Hi Lightforce, jboy, The Count, hello everyone
Fast typing Count. :-)
Either way should take care of it.

Hi all
Looks like an interesting app - thanks Count.
Although I'm starting to move away from 95 (probably one of the last) I still have it running on several machines - scanreg is such a lifesaver in 98, its absence in 95 is a pretty glaring one. Thanks for the additional info Mesich.

Had a quick look at your link and may have misunderstood the situation. It seemed to me that this part was a case of just copying over scanreg.exe to a W95 machine.
I did this once on a Compaq W95 and it some stage it got into a mess trying to restore the previous good registry "using W98 pholosophy".
I think this is a safer bet. Filch the first three files from a W98 machine:
scanreg.exe -- goes in Command folder
scanreg.ini -- goes in Windows folder
scanregw.exe -- goes in Windows folder
scanreg.reg -- create the following file and merge it into your registry:REGEDIT4
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run]
"ScanRegistry"="C:\\WINDOWS\\scanregw.exe /autorun"Note when you first add it to the PC you won't have any restore point to go back to.

Sounds like you inherited an old machine as a going concern with problems unknown. Personally I think it is a waste of time trying to fix these problems and that you should reinstall winodw.
My advice would be to reinstall win95 or if possible win98se using 98lite so you can use the win95 shell. This means you get all the driver advantages of win98se but with the speed of win95.
This will solve all your problems or my name ain't Jed.

My guess is your registry is dirty big time. The 1st thing i'd do is run RegSeeker 1.35b to make sure your registry is clean. If you can't run scandisk or defrag, you probably have some program running in the background preventing it. In regseeker again, open the Startup Entries option, and look at what is starting along with windows. Systray and your anti-virus should show-up, and you firewall if you use one. Most of whatever else you see you should delete (can be put back easily from most useful programs). The less runs at startup, the easier scandisk and defrag will work. Like jboy said in resp #1, use the ME defrag if you aren't already. Should work now!

Oh! And if you want to run ad-aware, just download version 6.0 build 181 from my site! It will work fine, no contortions required!
Find it in my Security section...

Ooopsy, my #9 was meant for your eyes (sorry I should have said so). Thought it might be a safer alternative to the link you gave (assuming I understood it correctly)

Hello everyone,
Derek,
Your method in response #9 is definitly the way to go as it will create backups if one should need to perform a restore in the future.
For just wanting to run the scanreg /fix command one only needs the scanreg.exe file.
Your method is definitly a better alternative.

Mesich

Hi Mesich & All
Fine, thanks Mesich. That was the problem I had tho. It ran scanreg /fix fine using just the file, then one fine day it couldn't fix, so it automatically tried to "restore" instead using W98 ideas.
It then got into a glorious old muddle, then failed to boot to Windows. If I hadn't had my own registries already saved (batch file operated copy/paste) it might have been a pig to sort out.
Hopefully the approach in #9 sorts this.

Hello everyone,
Thanks for the additional info Derek. I am setting up Win95 on a older laptop for a friend later this week and shall do just as you stated in response #9.
I hope all is well with you and yours.
Best Regards,
Mesich
