Western Digital WD400

No matter what I do I cant get my Computer to admit that this drive exists.
Is this because the WD400 is EIDE?
Its a brand new hard drive fresh out of the static bag.
I have tried the WD suggestion of 16383x16X 63 but to no avail.

Motherboard is:
MS-6161

Any help appeciated greatly.

Yes I messed up again, but it was fun. Sorry about the monkey in the fridge, seemed like a cool idea at the time.

A bios update is in order, or use the overlay software package that came with the drive.

WD have installer software, FAQ's, and a user forum on their site.

Hi Remus, Dan, Rambler, hello everyone

Remus,
There was a 32GB hard drive limitation on a Bios dated prior to June 1999. You have a couple of options, update the BIOS as stated by Dan, or use the Data LifeGuard Utility from Western Digital.

Either one should allow the BIOS to see the larger hard drive. I personally use the utility vise the BIOS upgrade.

Best Regards,
Mesich

With some motherboards that wouldn't see a 40 gig I manually entered the C/H/S settings of 16383/16/63. Although this translates to 8.4 gig it is the maximum C/H/S that a bios can use. Above that it must be configured as LBA.

Using those settings the motherboard would sometimes see the entire 40 gig capacity. I found out the firmware on some drives has the 16383/16/63 written to it. Apparently when the bios queries the drive in the posting process it returns the full capacity.

Anyway, if a bios upgrade isn't available you might want to give it a try.
